Baron needs neutered and I'm scared... He is 16 months old and weighs 7-8 pounds. Is there one or more anesthesias that are safer for Yorkies than others? He also has 1 baby Canine tooth that will need to be extracted @ the same time. I've put off having it done because I'm afraid something will happen to him! I need some answers...Can anyone help me? Thank-You for listening, I just Love him SO MUCH... |
Baron should be absolutely fine but I completely understand your worry! Jackson's getting neutered next week at 6 months old and I'm a nervous wreck. But, Jackson is a bigger boy at 13 pounds so I don't think he will have as many issues or concerns as a 3-5 pound yorkie going under. Baron sounds nicely sized as well. Jackson will be getting two baby teeth pulled as well. I know Isoflurane and Sevoflo gas anesthesia are supposed to be the best. |
Your pup should be just fine. Make sure that they run a complete blood chemistry (CBC), liver and kidney function included, and a bile acids test to be safe, as yorkies are extremely prone to liver problems. However, at your pup's size and lack of symptoms, you should be safe. You also need to make sure that your vet uses a heated surface, extensive monitoring and iso or sevo gas (which one is better is hard to say). He should do great and will make a better pet for it! |
Don't be shy to ask the right questions. The above posts gave you great information. The only thing I would add, is ask if the vet tech or the doctor administers the anesthesia. It is easy to over medicate, I would request the doctor does the anesthesia. Tell them if they do something wrong to your dog, you will just die, so every detail needs to be perfect. |
Dear Britster,Amandawash and Sandyapk, Thank-you all so much for such a quick response to my ?...I have been a wreck just thinking about having it done!! Britster I will have Jackson in my thoughts and Prayers when he has his neuter, Feel free to e-mail me...Ladies, You're life savers!! :):thumbs up |
Oh your welcome!! I have been there, I remember how scared I was. Keep us posted on how he does. When I took Mia in I was so scared. Ready to get in their faces, "are you sure you can do this on a little dog?" As I walked up to the counter there was a lady with a 2 pound dog waiting to drop it off to be spayed. Boy did that make me feel better. I hope you will be comforted by knowing we have all been there, and it is scary! I will be looking for the news of how it goes. |
It is scarey, but I'm sure he will be just fine. Missy and I are sending prayers and positive thoughts your way. |
I'm a retired Vet Assisstant and have helped do 1000's of these with the Vet. But, This is MY baby and I know how it's done , step-by-step . And, I'm still terrified!! I'll let you know the surgery date...Thanks... Baron's Nervous Mom :embarasse |
aww,i was worried sick before leo's surgery 3 weeks ago but nothing to worry about.Leo is 17months and 7.8lbs.Had his blood tests done, everything was fine and they also removed a tooth at the same time.Your baby will be fine :D |
He is a bigger guy like my chester so that helps, chester was neutered at 6 months and he weighed maybe 5 or 6 lbs at that time and they had to take a couple of teeth as well. I got him microchipped at the same time. I had the blood work done before as well. We all worry about our babies dont we good luck |
