Need some advice on FLEAS! EWWWW! Okay, so over Easter weekend me and Baxter had SO much fun! :animal36 My sister and I took him to the new dog park that opened in my hometown, and there were actually SMALL dogs that he could play with! He had so much fun! After that, me and my boyfriend took him on a hike up this mountain that took total about an hour. He walked the WHOLE way! :D:D Of course he was pooped afterwards. :p ANYWAYS, once back at home, I noticed he was scratching, and lo and behold, I found a flea on his stomach!:eek::eek: I was horrified and sad! I went to petsmart today, trying to find some advice on what I should use to get rid of the fleas and also to prevent future fleas, and of course, NO ONE would help! I would ask for a suggestion, and the lady would simply say we have this and this. Wouldn't explain anything to me or anything! It was very annoying! I told my boyfriend, who I was with at the time, that I would just post on my website for some advice. He laughed and we left and here I am! So, any advice on what to use to get rid of his fleas, and also for flea prevention in the future? Thanks guys, I love y'all! |
Preferrably Frontline Plus or Advantage. No Hartz, BioSpot, Zodiac, etc. or any of the cheaper brands. They tend to be dangerous... |
Call your vet, they should be able to give you a pill to kill any exsisting fleas left on your poor little one and then give you frontline plus or something like that. I have always used frontline and never had any issues, even with my larger dogs. |
Thanks guys! One of the ladies at Petsmart to use Advantix... But she didn't tell me why. I'll def. ask my vet. He doesn't seem to be scratching at all, and I haven't seen any more fleas... weird... I'm still calling the vet first thing tomorrow though! |
My little guy is always around other dogs and I use advantage on him every month since he was 10 weeks old. (They don't reccomend it for a puppy under 7 weeks.) It's a topical that you put between their shoulder blades and claims to kill 98-100% of fleas within 12 hours and keeps them protected for 4 weeks. My mother-in-law's dog had a infestation and everyone was getting chewed on. I applied some on her dog and the fleas stopped feasting when I called to checked 24 hours later. If you are in a location where you also have to worry about ticks, use advantix instead. The topical smells strong, more so with advantix. I reccomend you apply it to your dog just before a walk to give it time to dry and airout. Also, I was told by my vet not give my dog a bath until 7 days after. (He gets bathe frequently because he does therapy visits) This helps the topical protect longer. Psst.. I use to purchase advantage from my vet and pet store, but it's cheaper online. |
Anytime you are around other dogs this is what can happen for all of our dogs, for at home I vacum alot, wash his linen, vacum out his dog bed, you can use borax on the carpet it can be messy. I use a flea comb on chester every nite. You can get a saucer with soap and water and the fleas will jump towards the light. Fleas do not like cedar and euclyptyus and I will put this on him sometimes if Im going to be around other dogs. Apple cider vinegar you can put it on the dog mixed with water, fleas don like the acidic taste to the dog good luck I use revolution on chester as the previous poster said bio spot and hartz are bad news and the zodiac |
we used frontline on all our animals .. until one developed bad allergic reaction to it so we quit using that and bought some good pet medicated shampoo with tea tree and lavender oils much cheaper then frontline too! works a treat on our dogs and smells ohh soo good too  |
there are threads on YT that say to bathe in Dawn dishwashing soap, it kills fleas, and another that says coconut oil works. |
Thanks guys! Now I have so many options to try! :D:D |
Tricksie nevers goes in the yard, the fleas in FL are terrible, the Vet put her on Comfortis made my Lilly. It kills fleas and eggs. She has been on it for 2 years. |
Has anyone tried Richard's organics? Flea shampoo? it has 5 all natural essential oils. Rich moisturizing formula with aloe, vitamin E, lecithin and lanolin. Contains peppermint oil, clove oil, cedar oil, cinnamon oil, rosemary oil... Sounds good but does it work? |
