Don't know what to do Daisy Mae is 4 mths. old and weighs 1.4lbs. The vet is hoping she will get to 2 lbs. before she has first heat. She suggests spaying her since I have NO intentions of breeding her. Too small! I have 2 other yorkie males 4mths. also I plan on getting them fixed. They are both a little of 3 lbs. I just don't know what to do. She is very tiny and I am so afraid to have her spayed, but I don't want her to get any cancers either. Would you have it done or what til she hits 2lbs.? Daisy is my avatar. I also have pics of her in my album. |
I was always told by vets that they are not to be spayed until at least 2lbs. It is too dangerous ... Forgive me if I am mistaken, other YT members might have better insight then I do, however, this is how I have been under the impression. Yorkies are already tiny and prone to being put under /having reactions. they need pre blood work done too. If it were my puppy I would certainly wait. |
I would not spay at that weight unless a vet very experienced in small breeds convinced me that it was the right thing to do. Since she may not gain enough before her first heat, maybe reaccess after the first one and before the second... |
Four months is still really, really young. Being so small, she most likely won't go into heat until much, much closer to her year-old mark. She still has a lot of growing to do. I would get your males neutered around 6-7 months old, and then just deal with her going into heat if she's not grown enough to safely spay her. |
Thanks, that is what I am leaning at. I would rather take a chance and let her have her first heat then to spay her if she doesn't make it to 2 lbs. Surely she will get past 2lbs before she is one year old! I am planning on getting the boys fixed soon. |
My Lacy did most of her growing between 4 and 6 months so I'm sure yours will grow some too. It doesn't hurt to wait until she's a little older to see if she'll grow. I really doubt she'll go into heat before 7 or 8 months, and it could be as long as a year. I would just see how big she is in about two months. Any size dog can be spayed...even hamsters and other pocket pets have been spayed. However, I would be sure I had a vet that was experienced with putting very tiny dogs under anaesthesia..and I would be sure to do all bloodwork plus a bile acid test prior to the surgery to make sure she's healthy. And if you want to be even more cautious, have an EKG done to make sure her heart is healthy. Be sure to have your males neutered by 6 months just to be on the safe side. In fact, they can be neutered now. Many vets start spaying/neutering at 12-16 weeks now, and they are of good size. |
my bree was that weight at 4 months. she is over 7 months now and a shade over 2 lbs. i am definitely waiting until she is over a year old before even considering spaying her. i trust my vet and he is experienced in spaying small animals - not just dogs - but i am not chancing it until i KNOW she will not grow any more. good luck to both of us :) |

If they were mine, I'd have the boys neutered and wait till she's at least a year old to have her spayed. |
You need to wait for a few reasons, but, one is because she will probably have teeth that need pulled, so would wait so you can have everything done all at once. Mine is 10 mos now and is between 2 and 2 1/2 lbs. I was going to wait to have her spayed, but, I think I'm going to call tomorrow just to see what the vet thinks(am going to check with a different vet other than my own). I doubt with yours being so small she will go in to heat before 10 mos, mine hasn't yet. |

wait!!! If she is 4 month old more likly she will get around 3-4 pounds grown, I would let her grow and get as big as she will get. It is just two scary!!! Just keep the males away, belly bans work great. |
