Food for older Yorkie???? Recommendations??? My 12 1/2 year old Yorkie Belle is starting to slow down some due to old age. Belle is missing most of her front teeth (she also has cataracts and is pretty hard of hearing) and while she still has her molars I have noticed recently that she doesn't eat as much of her hard food as she used to. I feed ProPlan chicken and rice and the new formula has these soft meaty chunks (made out of soy), I just noticed recently that she is picking out these soft bits and not eating the hard bites as much. At a recent vet check we noticed that her weight is down from 3 lbs and 8-10 oz (usually) to 3 lbs 5 oz so I'm a little concerned that she is not eating enough. I've always resisted feeding canned food since I didn't think it was healty enough but I think we are going to have to look at it now. Can anyone recommend a healthy soft or canned diet for her? I would appreciate recommendations and/or websites who show nutritional information. Thanks so much, Teresa and Belle |
Oh your a good mom, I would thing that with the eye situation the smellier the better forr the food. I feed Natural Balance and I know they make a canned food as well as a roll whch you can slice and cut into small pieces you can also grate it in a cheese grater and that might work very well for you. I get it at Petco, but you can get it at other places here is there website Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance® Pet Foods :1 |
As they age, it really becomes more about what they're *able* to eat - so I think you're listening to all her cues. What about Wellness (available at Petsmart) canned? They have a lot of flavors. Or Evangers? Not sure what their current status is, but they used to be good. :) |
The natural balance food roll would be a option. merrick makes several flavors of their wet food, does she like some boiled chicken and rice |
sammy, the toothless wonder, prefers dog whisperer food to wellness. he is very particular about the smell of his food! I have noticed that since i started squirting salmon oil on his food that he eats better. |
