ACEPROMAZINE Tranquilizer/Sedative...anyone ever used this on their babies?
 

Tatum's surgeon gave me some Acepromazine to use on her for when we have to go back to see him, being that he is 2 - 2 and 1/2 hours away and Tatum totally FREAKS OUT in the car. She literally almost hyperventilates. I *have* to give her something to calm her down - she just gets too upset.

We have to go back to see him tomorrow so that he can remove her sutures and she is also going to her first "official" round of PT with her physical therapist. Then in 2 more weeks, we will have to go back again.

Anyway, I used to give Acepromazine to my Cocker Spaniel years ago that also hated being in the car (we actually almost lost her once when she was so worked up from being in the car that her air way got blocked and her tongue turned blue, she wasn't getting any oxygen and it was HORRIBLE...we had to rush her to an animal hospital where she stayed overnight) - ANYWAY, I do not want any of this happening to Tatum.

When I gave them to my Cocker Spaniel she did WONDERFUL with them. They made her sleep for about 4 hours in the car when we had to evacuate for a hurricane, but she was still alert if I called her name, etc.

I was just wondering if anyone here has ever given them to their Yorkies and if so, how did they do with them?

Tatum is also on other meds (Hydroxyzine for allergies, Metacam for pain, and Clavamox antibiotic) - so I hope that the Acepromazine Tranquilizer won't interfere with these and cause any problems?

I'd trust the surgeon with it and go ahead.
If you aren't sure if she is going to react, you could give it a bit before leaving and give it about 30 minutes to kick in, so if she reacts, you are close to your own vet.

I have never used it but it is a common pre anesthetic drug.
Of course there is some risk but it should be fine...

My vet gave this to Bailey for car sickness and he does really well on it. I also give it to him before he goes to the groomers and he's very calm. He freaks out at the sound of clippers.

Thank you so much! I am so glad to hear that Bailey does ok with them...it makes me feel alot better :) Of course I know that every baby is different, but I have just never given these to a dog this small before so I was a little worried.

It does take 30 min. minimum to take effect, but should make her nice and calm. Poor Tatum, I hate to think of her being *that* scared of car rides!!

Yeah, it used to work wonders for my Cocker Spaniel :) It always made her so calm and relaxed, she would just sleep, thank goodness! I hope it does the same for Tate!

I am going to give it to her 45 minutes before we leave in the morning, that way I have a little extra time to observe her and make sure that she is doing ok with it before we get on the road.

He gave her 10mg and told me to give her HALF of a 1/4 - boy is THAT going to be hard :eek: We got a pill cutter....I am making hubby do it, cause I know I'll screw it up :rolleyes: LOL.

Oh, and her appointment is at 11:45 in the morning, so we have to leave very EARLY. Then her first "official" PT session with her physical therapist is at 12:45.

It is going to be a long day tomorrow :(

Aww, I hope it goes wonderful tomorrow for you guys. I guess I've never seen Ace in a pill, I can't imagine what HALF of 1/4 looks like!!!

What a total NIGHTMARE it was :eek: I just hope that when they remove her sutures it doesn't hurt her :( I accidentally touched them a couple of times and she jumped 10 feet :eek:

The Acepromazine that my Cocker Spaniel was given was in pill form too...but Lord knows I didn't have to cut HALF of 1/4! :eek: I have NO idea how I am going to pull THAT off.....I mean hubby.....not me, I'm not touchin' it, lol!

We used ACE for our two yorkies when we moved from our last house. I knew we needed to calm them down or else they would be barking at the movers all day. It definitely took the edge off their stress level, but it didn't knock them out completely. We had no problems with it.

Thank you so much! :) I am sooo relieved to hear that your little ones did well on it too, WHEW! :thumbup: If it will just make her lay down a rest a little...that is all I ask for LOL. She just gets so, so, SO worked up the car - all she does is cry, cry, cry....and yawn, and alot of the time her little tongue is hanging out and she is panting - it is NOT pleasant AT-ALL :cry: It makes ME nervous WRECK because I know SHE'S so nervous. Ughhh. I am saying prayers tonight that tomorrow these pills will do the trick and that she has NO side effects from them! :hands:

Lilly does the exact same thing whenever we go somewhere. Like if I take her with me to my mom's, she gets like that when we get closer... it's NUTS. She's almost made me have an anxiety attack before because she starts getting so excited/nervous. :eek:

OH GIRL, I know ALL about it....TRUST ME!! Tatum makes me so nervous in the car that I literally start biting my nails and when I cross my legs my foot just starts going and I can't get it to stop LOL. I become such a nervous wreck that I don't even know what to do with myself! I know it sounds extreme and silly, but I almost lost my Cocker Spaniel in the car because she freaked out so badly and would literally stop breathing, so now I'm scared that it is going to happen with Tatum too and I just go nuts! :eek: I *PRAY* that this tranquilizer works tomorrow! :hands: I cannot deal with her in the car going crazy like that for 2 and 1/2 hours....if so, I'LL be the one that needs the pill, lol!
