Heartworm question
 
I was just wondering if anyone is using a hemeopathic preventive for heartworm. I have been thinking about seeing a homeopathic vet because my pup has seizures since she was about 6 months old. I took her off topical flea and tick because it definately made her seizures occur more often. I also believe the interceptor is not good for her. She just seems very sensitve to chemicals. Just curious?

I will be watching for an answer to this too! We are an all natural family. There is an essential oil site that might have a solution too. Linda at Home Page is very helpful and knows tons about natural solutions to all kinds of health problems.

My husband has severe nerve damage from a spinal cord injury. He is in terrible pain 24/7 and needed to get off pain meds and her Deep Healing and Pain Away oils have helped him be drug free and actually sleep better than ever before!

Yes I like to go the natural route when possible also. What is your pup on for heartworm? I always used interceptor but only in the spring and summer. Year round is just too much for her.

Medication reactions and seizures are symptoms of liver shunt. She needs a bile acids test to check liver function as soon as possible. Most Yorkies can handle heartworm meds fairly well. Although I agree that they are very harsh, I think the disease is too serious to try and prevent with any type of questionable homeopathic product. We use Interceptor also but do as little flea med as possible.

Lady has been an epileptic for ten years and does very well on Interceptor and Frontline.

Epilepsy rarely starts in a six month old puppy. Seizures in puppies are usually symptom of another condition. In Yorkies, liver shunts are usually the cause.

As Ellie May says, she needs a bile acids test to check her liver function.

You might try a black walnut and wormwood tincture for heartworm and other parasites
 
I personally use a parasite tincture that contains black walnut hull, wormwood, cloves etc. I get it at Whole Foods. I use it myself about every 6 months when I do a cleanse. I researched it and found that it works for heartworm in dogs too. Google "dog black walnut hull and heartworm", you'll get lots of info, however, don't get caught up in the pricey hype. My tincture is by Herbs etc and so far so good. I start Roxy off with about 4 drops on her food and increase daily until 10 drops and then do ten drops for about 2 weeks. Here is a site to start with- most of these dogs already had heartworm. Roxy never had them, I just started using it for prevention.

Her liver function test have always come back normal, but I don't think they ever did a bile acid test. She will be 7 years old in October. She has an upcoming appt. for her teeth, so I will surely ask the vet. She has never had to take meds for her seizures because they are so sporadic and don't last very long. Thanks for the advice:)

Yes I know this is a touchy subject, thanks for the information. At least I can research all my options, talk to the vet and make a decision. Thanks again.:)

I didn't know she was seven years old. If her liver values (ALT) are in the normal range, you are probably dealing with idiopathic epilepsy. If she only has a couple of seizures a year, no medication is necessary.

Lady has had idiopathic epilepsy for almost ten years. She has to be on seizure medication, but her seizures are under control.

Here is a list of possible seizure triggers. Keep a journal and record when she has a seizure and if any of the following may have contributed. You can already put heartworm medication on the list.

In Lady's case, the biggest trigger is changes in barometric pressure. Spring/Fall weather with big temperature extremes and the thunderstorms we get here in the Carolinas are her main triggers.

Thank you so much for the list of triggers. It's funny I do notice she tends to have seizures when the seasons change or if she gets scared by a really loud noise. Both on the list! So happy to hear that Lady's seizures are under control. Thanks again, and Happy Easter!
