I'm Afraid for my Babies teeth cleaning...Help! MY 6 YEAR OLD YORKIE "CHILLY" HAS TO HAVE SOME TEETH PULLED THIS FRIDAY. HE HASN'T BEEN PUT UNDER SINCE I HAD HIM NEUTERED AT 6 MONTHS. HIS TEETH ARE BAD (JUST THE FRONT ONES) BUT i'M SO AFRAID OF HIM GETTING THE GAS, I'VE HEARD YORKIES HAVE A HARD TIME WITH THAT. IT'S BEING DONE ON GOOD FRIDAY SO I'M TAKING THAT AS A GOOD SIGN. MY DOC, WHO I LOVE SAID IF I DON'T AT LEAST HAVE THE REAL BAD ONES PULLED, IT COULD LEAD TO WORSE HEALTH PROBLEMS...CAN SOMEONE PUT MY MIND AT EASE, HAS ANYONE HAD THEIR DOG'S TEETH CLEANED WHILE UNDER GAS, I GET TO STAY THERE WHILE THEY DO IT (ABOUT 1 HOUR) & TAKE HIM HOME, SO I'M GLAD OF THAT. HOW HAVE YOUR BABIES FAIRED? HOW WORRIED SHOULD I BE. I ALMOST WANT TO CANCEL...HELP, SILVERBELLS (AKA) SHERRI:confused: |

It is the right thing to do. Left untreated it can weaken the heart, liver, kidneys and lungs. All of the loose teeth should be pulled and xrays should probably be done to check for bone loss. Antibiotics and pain meds should be given. Your vet can apply OraVet to form a barrier against tartar. You would have to apply it weekly at home after the cleaning though. Is the vet doing preop blood work? The same thing happened to Ellie at age 5 and she had to have oral surgery also. It was done under gas anesthesia with an injectable before. Isoflurane and Sevoflurane are the safest for maintenance. |

Recently I just had my Didi baby teeths pulled. I was very worried at the beginning..but he did really well. I am sure your baby will do well.. |

thank you sooo much! I feel better already! I just needed to know that this "should" be done & it wasn't just a $ surgery, not that I think this Doc. is like that in any way. I am so nervous! I'm glad I don't have kid's!...expect for my dog's. Keep the replies coming, i'm going to walk in there with confidence! Again, thank you. |

sorry, me again, is there anything I should ask prior to the cleaning? They're only using gas on him cuz he has a reaction to everything! Benadryl before every shot! But is there anything I should tell or ask? thanx! |

Reactions to everything isn't normal and he should probably have his bile acids tested to evaluate liver function. |

Yes, they did his complete blood work up on the 28th of March. He had an appointment for a Heartworm check...poor baby had his blood drawn for that, which came back fine, the the Doc showed me how bad his teeth were and suggested removing a few, they didn't keep the blood form the Heartworm test, so they had to draw again! But they called me the next morning & said everything was perfect. So I made the appt. It's just a couple of teeth, why am I so worried...because he's had problems with most of his shots? But the do know his history, they always say oh-oh, it's Chilly get the Benadryl ready... |

Make sure they so a full blood panel and give IV fluids during surgery. This will cost extra but it worth it.. |

The IV is just for fluids? Because I asked them to "just" use the gas to put him out, without the iv with med's. They tried to give him 2 shot's in the same visit years ago (rabies & distemper) I think, I ended up rushing him back because he was stumbling & dizzy. Now they always give it before any injections. When they called about his blood test, they said Liver, Kidneys, and all counts were perfect. Is it true that Yorkies have problems when put out for surgeries? |

Most Yorkies do okay under anesthesia. Those with livers problems (which Yorkies are prone to) may not do too well. I wouldn't say that there is a large risk but there is a small one anytime anesthesia is used. The IV would be there just give fluids and he would have it in already if an emergency came up and they had to give drugs. Propofol can be given before the gas to put them under and it is generally pretty safe. You can always ask the vet just to mask down with the gas though. Then there are injectables that can be used before the gas. Some are good and some are not. It is not always in the dogs best interest to mask down with no premedication. Quote:

They wouldn't clean Chilly's teeth...I woke up later than my husband, and of course he didn't remember about his appointment, and let him eat breakfast! So now my new appointment is the 23rd! Even longer to worry now! But thank's for all of your replies they make me feel more at ease...Happy Easter! |
