Vet Question??? :( I took both my yorkies to a new vet for yearly shots and check-ups. Silver has a problem with urinary incontinence and she takes 25 mg.... of PPA twice a day. I had been purchasing it in tablet form from my old vet for $38.00 for 60 pills. Well when I get home and check Silver's meds I noticed it was capsules instead of tablets and they had charged me $62.50 for 60 pills!!!! WAY to MUCH!!!! I found the exact med on Drs. Foster & Smith web site for $6.00 per 60 pills! You can imagine how ripped off I felt & a little mad too. Well today I returned the meds to the vet and ask for a prescription to order them off the internet. I was told they would not write prescriptions for meds they offered for sale! I don't think they can legally deny a prescription that I had basically paid for, to the tune of $325.00 the day before. Has anyone else experienced this problem, or am I looking at this the wrong way???? |
That is such a rip off. Cali is on medicine that cost 60.00 a month from my vet and I checked on the internet and that was the cheapest price. So unless my vet gets a discount it is the same price as I would pay if I got it on my own. I can see them making a little on meds but that is ridiculous and they should write you a perscription. |
Hm, I have never had the experience. When I told my vet I wanted to purchase Sentinel online, she wrote me a prescription without me asking for it. I'm not sure if it's legal to deny a prescription. Maybe you can try a different vet in the area? |
Wow - definitely worth looking into!!! That's quite a mark up!! I don't know about "legally" but it seems there are some ethical issues here?? |

Wow, that is really shocking. Sometimes I am unhappy with my vet - I have only one English-speaking vet option here in Korea - but I guess it could be a LOT worse. I'm sorry you're out so much money and now have to do it all over again at another vet in order to get your baby her prescription. What a frustrating situation. :( |
Thanks for all the input, I had no idea how many other people encountered the same problem. I have decided to take another approach, Drs. Foster & Smith will call your vet and get the prescription directly. I am going to explain to Drs. F&S from the get go that my vet may not cooperate. Hey it's worth a try. Let you know the out come. |
I guess there are a couple ways of looking at this. Vets make a lot of money from the drugs they prescribe, so I could see why they would insist on selling them to you. On the other hand they are making good paying clients upset which is really a bad idea.:rolleyes: I don't know about legally but most wiill write prescriptions it seems. Sometimes there is a small fee. Ellie's vet has always written prescriptions when I've asked but then again I usually buy drugs from the office. I can't see her denying a script. We drop plenty of money there for other things.:rolleyes: |
Most of the scripts i've gotten for Bailey I get from a special pharmacy, so i've never experienced this problem. I know my vet stocks meds at their office but I don't know what they charge. I get Bailey's vitamins from the Vet and they are the same price that i've found elsewhere... |
