I am so sorry little Ranger is hurting. Hopefully he will get some relief soon. :( Sending lots of hugs your way!! |
One thing I am really concerned about is this new generation of dogs growing up. Some breeders spay/neuter at 12 weeks to make sure they are not used for breeding and resues s/n at as early as 8 wks sometimes since they are so concerned it will never be done if they don't. These dogs do not have time to let their bones mature and will be in great danger. My vet will not do it before 6 months ever. |

It is heartwrenching when they moan and wimper. Trust me I know. Maybe a different pain med might be helpful. Is Clavamox a pain med? I don't know the other med you are giving. As far as eating, Hot Rod ate good for the first few meals and then all of a sudden didn't want anything, even chicken. And he wasn't drinking a whole (hardly any) water for a while. Hubby and I would put the water bowl up to him constantly and he would turn his head from it. I hope the surgeon can recommend something that will alleviate the pain. We'll keep Ranger in our thoughts and prayers. Mommy is taking really good care of you baby! :) Hugs and kisses from Hot Rod, Maggie and mommy. |

Some also said that depending on the size of the dog, the patch might not be good for them. I believe that was Kalina82 who said it. How big is Ranger? Hot Rod is 4 lbs, he was too small for it. |

Hoping Ranger feels better.....so sorry he had a bad nite. He fell asleep with his head on yr hand......awwww. It's so hard to see these sweet babies in any pain at all. Sending thoughts/prayers that the worse part is over for sweet adorable Ranger & the healing & recovery process will be smooth. HUGS little guy! |
Just sending Ranger get well wishes again today. Hope today is a better one for him and tomorrow is even better. |
He's chewing a bully!!!!!!!! Ok, so it's been 3hrs since the removal of the Fentanyl Patch. Ranger is alert, MUCH brighter and is CHEWING A BULLY!! He's shaking a bit but he went out and went potty, said hi to his big brother and sister who are out enjoying the sunshine, and came in and started going to town on his bully stick. I *think*hope*pray* that the worst is behind us, and Ranger will be a pain in my butt in no time!!!! |

:cheer::cheer::cheer: Yay he sounds like he is much better and on his way now! Way to go Ranger! |
Hey girl....was just popping in to check on Ranger! I read your update and I am SO sorry to hear that he was hurting so badly last night, but I'm glad to hear that he seems to be doing a little better today! Tatum is on Metacam for the pain and it helps her TREMENDOUSLY. This is also the pain medication I used BEFORE the LP surgery, when she was just in pain on some of her "bad days". Are you doing at-home PT with Ranger? We do this three times daily with Tatum and we have been since day one. We also do the heat therapy and the cold compresses....it truly, truly does help her *so* much. We have missed PT only a couple of times, but hubby and I both noticed that on the couple of times that we did miss, she was actually hurting more and WOULD NOT use her left leg at all, and was limping pretty badly on her right....so the hot/cold therapy and PT is very, very important. Her surgeon stressed this so much. And now after having been doing it, and even missing it a couple of times, I really do see and understand the importance of it all. It truly helps them. It is important to help the knees/bones flex as they are sooo tight after the surgery, and our babies are used to having pretty badly "messed up knees" - so the "tightness" they feel after surgery is a whole new thing for them. Flexing the knees really helps to loosen them up and make them feel better. The hot/cold therapy also helps with pain and swelling and it is so imperative that you do this to help with those two things. Let me know if you have any questions girl and give that sweet boy a kiss for me....we love him ya know! ;) I hope he is feeling better soon...keep us posted! |
I forgot to add....the way we do the hot/cold therapy is by first taking a warm washcloth (fairly warm, but not so hot that it will burn them) and gently holding it on the knee (right where the incision is) for 5 minutes. Just hold him in your lap comfortably while you are doing this. Then, after 5 minutes have passed, start flexing the knee, 25 times on each knee - but ONLY do this after you have done the heat therapy for 5 minutes. Bend the knee naturally like it would normally bend, the extend it outward in a slow and gentle motion. After you have done this therapy 25 times, then immediately follow with cold therapy. We do this by putting crushed ice into a ziplock sandwich baggie and then putting a (dry) washcloth over the bag. You will then place it on the knee, directly where the incision is, for 10 minutes. Do this on each knee, 3 times daily. It helps them tremendously with not only the pain, but flexing the knees/bones which helps them get use of those little knees again ;) |
Amanda, I just thought of something. If you want me to video a session of Tate's PT and hot/cold therapy, I would be happy to this it for ya. Or Bo, don't know if you are doing this (PT, hot/cold therapy) but if either of you need to see a video....just let me know ;) Of course I will shorten it down so that you don't have to sit and watch the heat therapy for 5 minutes, or the cold therapy for 10, lol...but I can show you exactly what we do (knee flexes, etc.) if you feel like you need/want to see it :) |

We got presents!! 4 Attachment(s) This day has gone from being *terrible* to a really great day!!!!!!!!! Ranger is doing SO MUCH better without that stupid patch. He is alert and almost playful. He has chewed his bully and was really excited to open the box of PRESENTS we got from Mimi (TUMISMOM) Oh my gosh girl, you ROCK!!!!!! You COULD NOT have planned that package delivery better than it worked out!!! Here we were having just an awful morning, and then when Ranger perked up this afternoon, the mailman came!! He was SO EXCITED to see *his* goodies! Ryder thought for sure he should get some, too, but Ranger let him know that HE is all-deserving and they are HIS!! LOL!! Mimi, you are so sweet. What a whirlwind of a week, starting with the Emma thing, then Ranger getting diagnosed, then Ryder hurting himself and finishing up with Ranger's surgery and recovery. You taking the time out of your day to put together that package was AMAZING and reminds me WHY I LOVE YORKIE TALK!!!!! After Ranger opened up all his goodies and played (his immobile version of playing) with the toys on the couch, we went outside to potty and HE WALKED like NORMAL!!! NO LIMPING!!! I think he was rejuvenated and felt all the love from your package!!!!!!! Here are some pictures of the boys and all their fun stuff! Again, thank you so much, I can't tell you how much it meant to me. |
Ry Ry too... 3 Attachment(s) Please don't laugh at Ryder, I know he looks AWFUL, but please bear with us, he's been on cage rest for a week with no baths allowed  He pretty much looks HOMELY and unkempt but he is loved and cared for. :p The picture of Ranger and Ryder is pretty funny. I snapped it just before Ranger's lip started quivering, and I knew he was about ready to snap. Poor guy, Ryder wanted dat toy bery bery much! |
i have a question about the fentanyl patch they put on ranger. Do you know the mg of the patch they used? And how did they cut it? did they cut the whole patch or did they just cut the plastic film covering the sticky part? Where i worked PT was a valuable part of EVERY orthopedic case. ALL knee surgeries required PT afterwards. our instructions said to gently flex and extend all the joints in the effected leg(s) 3-4 times a day, 10 reps each joint. So the easiest way to do it would be to have the dog laying down on his side with the surgical leg on top. Then gently extend the leg straight out and, at the hip joint, bring it towards the belly just to the point they are uncomfortable, hold it for 5-10 seconds and release it. Then bring the leg straight back behind them, just to the point they are uncomfortable, hold, and release it back to starting position. repeat 10 times. Next, with the leg in extension, place one hand over the knee and use the other hand to slowly bend the knee up into the belly, hold, and extend it back out. repeat 10 times. Lastly flex and extend the hock joint the same way as the other joints. By doing this you are keeping all the joints moving so they don't get stiff from lack of use. With many dogs that have knee issues the legs become atrophied because they don't use them as much as the front legs. with some dogs you can see a difference in the muscle mass as well. So the passive range of motion exercises help build the muscle mass back up. |

Anyway, I was just checking in one last time today. That was such a sweet thing for Mimi to do! Those are great gifts. Glad to see the boys are feeling well enough to enjoy them. |

I understand about the use of PT and it's benefits, but I am not comfortable doing something the surgeon clearly told me not to. He did instruct me to take him out, every hour or so, and walk just a bit (I'm talking ten or so steps, if he's comfortable). He said this will keep his joints moving and will introduce Ranger to his new knees. It will gradually be worked up throughout the period of eight weeks. |

As for the PT, i definitely agree that you should follow your vets instructions. |

He is doing so great now though. I moved him to his "recovery house" which is a larger, soft-sided crate. He's chewing on a bully :D Thanks for your concern!! |
I am so glad the boys are doing better!! I love the pictures and they are sooo adorable. We love you guys! |
The pain patches can and will do funny things...I'd be very leery of using them on such a small animal. But anyway, I am thrilled to hear he is doing so much better...and what a wonderful surprise present he got!!! Here's to a quick and uneventful recovery... |
Ranger and Ryder look adorable! Through all of this I haven't asked how Ryder is doing. It looks like he is coming along fine. He looks so cute with his "just rolled out of bed" look going on. I bet you can't wait until you have both of them running around! |
