I need help or any information regarding probelm with my sofie!!!
 
My little Sophie has had two odd and unexplainable health episodes. She is approx 3 pounds and very tiny boned. The vet is stunned as to what is going on and so am I. Her symptoms are as follows: not able to stand up, tilted head, not eating, not drinking, and her body will twirl/roll on the floor, as if she is having seizures. The vet has done numerous test and has no idea what is causing it. Each episode took place approx 2-months apart. The vet gave her IV, antibiotic, steroids and she seemed to be ok, but she is having another episode and is at the vet now and it seems to be worse this time. Can anyone PLEASE tell me what they may know or has anyone heard of this problem. I am DESPERATE!!

I'm so sorry about your baby. My main suspect is liver shunt. It's very prevelent in yorkies. Signs are failure to grow, picky eating, GI upset, hypoglycemia, seizures, head tilt, circling, head pressing, etc. I would run a full blood panel and do a pre and post meal bike acid test to check liver function. I would also do a urinalysis to check for crystals and stones.

if bile acid test is normal it could be sonething else neurological...primarily vestibular. Head tilt, not being able to stand, and circling and rolling are also signs of a central vestibular problem. What do her eyes look like? Do they constantly move abnormally from side to side or up and down?

Like I said, I more so suspect liver shunt but vestibular is another possibility

I'm so sorry, I have no suggestions, but hope they can figure it out and treat it. It has to be very frightening for you and for her too.

Her eyes seem normal no side to side or up and down movements. The vet did a liver panel or profile a few months back and said she did not have liver shunt. I am totally at a loss as to what is could be. I am upset thinking that she may be suffering. She is not able to even get up right now. She is such a sweet little girl, it breaks my heart that this is happening to her.

If a liver shunt was already ruled out, has your vet considered GME?

I read this information and got excited thinking maybe this could be the problem. I called the vet right away and he said no. :(

Did he just do a blood chemistry panel or did he actually do a bile acid test? With a BAT you take a premeal blood draw and then feed and two hours later take a postmeal blood draw. Sometimes a blood chem panel will be normal with a liver shunt but the BAT will be high.

You may need to have her referred to a neurologist

GME can be tricky to diagnose. A spinal tap is usually necessary. What makes him so sure he can rule out GME so quickly?

I agree with Michelle about the liver shunt, too. Unless Sofie has had a bile acids test, Protein C, ultrasound, etc., that can't be ruled out either.

When I called him he said, most GME cases the animal is in severe pain, which he said Sofie is not. He did say that it required taking fluid from the spine and he said he just did not feel that was her problem. I hope he is correct. I know he is an extremely good vet. I will mention the liver shunt tests again. I know he completely ruled out liver shunt sometime back, because I had a concern about her having a liver shunt. The test showed no sign of liver shunt.

He said that as of right now he is puzzled as to her problem.

GME is really beyond the scope of a vet in general practice. Most cases of suspected GME are referred to a vet school.

Since your vet is stumped, I think it's time to ask for a referral to a vet school or internal medicine specialist.

If he's ruled out liver shunt with a normal BAT then it's something else neurological most likely. I agree it might be best to refer to a neurologist or even an IM specialist.
