Lost a dog spaying even with blood tests? We have an appointment for Penny next week to be laser spayed. They will run all the tests before doing surgery, but has anyone here lost their dog even though all the tests came back OK? Penny is 6 pounds and will be almost 8 months next week. After reading about Abbey and then all the other spay or not to spay stuff I am getting worried. |
It's very uncommon so try not to worry, but I do knowxsome dogs have died under anaesthesia even with normal bloodwork and being seemingly healthy. I know some can be allergic to the anaesthesia and I don't know if there is any way to know that beforehand, but again it's not common. The other thing I wonder about those who have died is if something was actually wrong with their heart. Hardly anyone does an EKG beforehand and I wonder if that would have caught heart issues and saved some that have died. I guess we will never know in most cases. I did hear of one necropsied that did end up having abnormally small heart and lungs and they didn't know beforehand. Most likely your baby will be just fine. I know it's impossible not to worry though. |
Besides the bloodwork, make sure they do a pre op EKG before Penny is sedated. Also, make sure they have an IV catheter in during the surgery. That way, if there are any complications, they can deal with them instantly. Do you know if your vet uses isoflurane or sevoflurane gas? Don't be afraid to ask as many questions as you need to of your vet beforehand. I'm sure Penny will be just fine. |
I was really worried about that too, but my sweetie ended up fine. :) Her tests came back good too. |

I will call about the EKG and see if they can do that too. Thanks! |
