What to feed a picky eater??? I'm hoping that someone has some suggestions because Chloe is the pickiest eater! She came home from my breeder on Nutro Ultra. I switched her to Acana and she ate that for about a week and decided she didn't want it anymore. I tried softening it with water, and mixing it with innova canned puppy food. A week ago she liked the innova canned puppy food and would eat it all up. Now, I have to play with it in order for her to eat it, and today she won't eat it at all. What is going on? I bought EVO dry food but she won't eat that either. I've had her for 2 1/2 months. She is 18 weeks old. Does anyone have any suggestions? Anyone have a similar situation? Thanks in advance!:D |
Stick to 1 food you would like her on. Tough love is the key, she will eat when she is hungry enough and she MAY miss a meal or 2. Don't back down. I would wait until she is at least 6-7 months for the EVO. Also, many Yorkies are free fed b/c of this reason. I do not really think they are all picky, many of them (including my Snickers) like to eat here and there. Snick's kibble is out from 3:45pm-8:30pm everyday and sometimes he eats more and sometimes less. He never eats in 1 sitting. His morning meal is raw, and that's another story-he gobbles it in 10 seconds. Just stick to it, she will eat. Try leaving it out if thats ok with you...she will prob nibble here and there. |

I do free feed :) I just am a huge worry wart about her becoming hypoglycemic so I like to have her eat every 2-3 hours just a little bit. Today she has eaten only a very small amount at 12:30 and a few treats and bits of apple since then. She won't eat anything else. Thank you for the suggestions though. Why wouldn't you feed EVO until 6-7 months? :) |
I don't thing it's right to make a dog eat kibble or go hungry. I've never seen a dog that didn't love real food. Maybe because it's not only the best ever, but it's the healthiest, safest and tastiest. ;) |

You don't think it's right to make a dog eat kibble? Why??? Dogs have been eating kibble forever! |
I would stick with ONE food, one you are comfortable and happy with. If you leave it out 24/7, she's get it when she's hungry. If you wanted, you could give her some with cottage cheese, yogurt or boiled chicken on top of kibble a few times a day. How old and what weight? |

I am wondering if giving her the other human food items will make her more picky? Any advice on that?.. She's 4.5 months and weighed 2.5 lbs at her last checkup 2 weeks ago! Thanks for your help :) |

Since she isn't super tiny, your hypo risks are a bit less than, especially now being almost five months. I can't remember which food you said you were feeding, but like I said before, I would pick one you really like (I like Innova puppy and very much like Wellness Puppy) and just keep it down for her. I don't know how long she went without eating before you switched but if you switch everytime she slows down, you will be creating a moster  If the poor eating keeps up, you may want to get a bile acid test done on her, to rule out any liver shunt.. |
My rudy is the pickiest of eaters. He is 1 year old and barely weighs 3lbs. So in February I Went to a Dog Show and they had samples that they were giving out. It is called Deli Fresh. To me they look like little meatballs! But he absolutely loves it. I make sure he runs around a lot and builds up an appetite otherwise he will just pick at his food. Fingers cross he still likes it in a couple of months.:) Good luck with your little one! |
Amanda is right on....I didn't mean to make your dog starve (come on!) The more variety you give your pup, they pickier they will get. This is from experience. If you keep giving her different foods, she will learn that when she denies what you give her-she will get something else. Also if you give her human foods, her diet will be off and she will not be getting the essentials she needs from her kibble. Also, EVO is high in protein and they say that giving pups a high protein diet can change their growth pattern. Some users on YT have started their pups on EVO, so its yoor call. I started Snick when he was 6.5 months and he is doing very well on it. Hang in there, she will come around. :) |
I had a pretty picky eater. I tried about three or four different foods with her and she finally decided she liked BLUE buffalo. Sometimes she gets a little picky with it but if I wet it in warm water she will eat it, and sometimes she just wants to be HAND FED! |
