I recently discovered that my morgan has trichiasis and wanted to share this with YT so others could be informed as well.

Trichiasis - simple explaination

Morgan has always had a excessive tearing problem. For years i thought it was due to small or clogged tear ducts. my regular vet tried to flush them when she was 1 1/2 years old during a dental and he was unable to. He said they were too small and that was why she was tearing. So i've been trying to deal with the tearing and lessen it. I tried apple cider vinegar, distilled water, RAW diet, different dry/wet dog foods, and angel eyes (half heartedly so i don't really know if it will work). NOTHING worked. Morgan still has tearing. the tearing leaves the area red and crusty, and smelly. her nickname is stinky face LOL

so about two months ago i went to visit a veterinary ophthamologist that worked for hospital i worked with. The tech tested her eye pressures and did a Schirmer tear test. Pressures are fine, and tears are above normal. The vet then came in and stained her eyes to look for scratches or abnormalities. Everything was fine. He was also able to easily flush her tear ducts with his fancy shmancy tools that the regular vet didn't have. Then came the magnifying glasses... LOL anyway what was discovered was that the hair in the very corner of the inner part of her eye (by her nose) is what the problem is. the growth actually starts on the inside of her eye because the eye lid in that area very slightly rolls into her eye. this couldn't be seen by me or the regular vet, and was only discovered by the ophthalmologist. He said the hair is in such a position that it allows the tears to wick from the eye down her face and beard. He said to use gen-teal to help lubricate the eye so the cornea doesn't get scratched. this is great and is working fine for that, however we still have a tear staining problem.

So now i am looking for a product get rid of the "stinky face". i want to get rid of the tear stains and crustiness that builds up. hopefully i can find something that will work with the gen-teal to make her face look nicer.

any one have any suggestions?

very interesting. Bubba has teary eyes sometimes, but no odor and no stains.

yeah this is something that not many people would think of so i hope by getting some info out there others will be able to treat their dogs as well

Lady has dry eye and I get Blephagel from her opthamologist. It is amazing for cleaning the eye area! A little dab on your fingertip gets rid of all the gunk and crustiness.

what does it do exactly and what was it prescribed for? its put outside the eye?

It's an eyelid/eyelash cleaner. Lady gets crusty tear stains from her dry eye. I'd tried different eyelid cleaners, but none has worked like Blephagel works. It really dissolves the gunk instantly.

It's made in France by a company called Laborotoires Thea.

Since you don't need a prescription, I'd probably order it from Canada. It really is amazing stuff. :thumbup:

kalina....please explain to me how you apply the Genteal. I bought the generic equivalant and want to use it on Snick's eyes but not sure how.

The genteal is a gel like eye drop that goes right on the lens. i open morgan's eye and squeeze a drop in without touching the cornea.

Oh ok...I doubt Snick will let me do that...I'll try.

well its something to work on then. I believe your dog should allow you to do anything you want to it, this way if in the future they need some sort of treatment you would have no problem doing it.
