Another Food ?...i know ;) I recently decided to switch Maddie's food when she started licking her paws and scratching after starting her on RC, which she gobbled up. I went to purchase Wellness or Natural Balance but the nutrition lady at the feed store suggested, or insisted :p, I try California Natural. Does anyone use this? I know it is a 4 star, but that doesn't help me out much. I would really love to hear from you all. Thanks (and the search continues....:p) |
The ingredients are okay and the company is okay but for true food intolerances, NB may very well work better. It is grainless and the meats are very novel for most dogs. CN would probably be my next choice. |

That was something I liked about Natural Balance, grain free. However, the CN does have rice...:eyebrow2: It is limited ingredient though, four I think, so we'll see. what do you feed?, if you don't mind me asking:rolleyes: |
I homecook. There are very few dog foods that Ellie could eat. She has allergies also. :( |
i would choose Wellness over natural balance, but that's just my opinion. I find that wellness is a better quality food. It may just be that Maddie is allergic to the corn or wheat in the RC (which is a popular complaint of this food). Wellness has a few different types of dry food. All of their foods also contain no by-products, corn, wheat, soy, and artificial colors, preservatives and flavors. I hate those "nutrition" people at the pet stores. They know nothing about food, only what the food company that is paying them tells them. There are adds for these types of jobs on craigslist that anyone can apply for. You just have to be available on certain days and listen to what the company tells you. they push their own food even if its crap. |

This is true, there are alot of ingredients in dog food. If one has the time and the knowledge to home cook then i say go for it. if not, then dog food it is. some may cause itchies and some will not. hopefully by just switching to a higher quality food the itchies will be eliminated. if you switch to another food like wellness that doesn't have corn, wheat, etc in it and she is still itchy then you may have a bigger problem on your hand. she may be allergic to a type of meat, in that case you'd have to do some trial and error feeds with that. When changing food to eliminate itching you need to just feed that one food and nothing else. you cannot give treats of a different type because they may contain the source of the itching. Typically you will read that it takes 3 months to sucessfully discover if the food works or not. However, personally i believe that it doesn't have to take that long in the less severe cases. if your dog just suddenly started itching when you placed her on one certain food, then a few weeks of a new food should help fix the problem. |
So a limited ingredient food, such as California Natural, would be where I need to start, right? |
If you are sure the corn is the problem, you can just switch to a food without it. If you have no idea what the problem is, then I would use a food with limited ingredients. If you switch to a food with some of the same ingredients as RC and the reaction continues, you won't know what she is reacting to. It's really up to you. However you want to do it... |
K, that was my concern with Wellness. There are a lot of ingredients in it as well. The grain free, CORE, had such a high protein, I was afraid of that too. She is a bit lazy, excuse me, like to cuddle:p She seems to like the CN, so far... |
Hi, I have mine on calif nat. I liked it because it has the least ingredients, a nice protein and fat #'s. I am feeding the lamb now, they did good on the chicken as well. Best to you and your furbaby  |
