Question about Reggie's weight and puppy food I am getting concerned that Reggie is overweight. He is up to 8.10 lbs. and he looks kinda roly poly. I can't go by any charts to determine what he should weigh because he is not full yorkie nor full Lhasa. Lhasas are a stocky build dog but then Yorkies are not. I know one problem is that he hasn't gotten enough exercise lately because it has been raining so much here and we haven't gotten to go walking daily. I can't give him full roam of the house to run either without supervision because of his eating things he shouldn't. He is like a little doggie vaccum sucking up and swallowing anything he finds. So he has been confined to the kitchen or his crate when we are not here and when we are I remove one of the nursery gates from the kitchen to the bonus room where the TV is and he can come in there with us. He is still eating the Royal Canine puppy food. He gets 1/4 cup twice day and a couple Old Mother Hubbard or Wellness treats in the day. I am wondering if he still needs to be on puppy food. The bag says to feed it until they are 10-12 mos. old. but I know puppy food is higher in calories than regular dog food and I am wondering if he really needs to be on it since he doesn't get enough activity all the time. He was 7 mos old March 11. What are you all's thoughts? |
Here are some photos I just took so you all can see his body size. He hates the camera so I had to chase him around to get these. He ran from his favorite window seat and jumped in Marissa's lap where she was sitting with the laptop. That is his other favorite spot is between someone's legs on a blanket while we sit reclined watching TV or on the internet. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...ggiesnaps6.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...ggiesnaps7.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...ggiesnaps4.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...ggiesnaps5.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...ggiesnaps1.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...ggiesnaps2.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...ggiesnaps3.jpg |
Just judging from the photos, he doesn't look overweight to me. If he is not getting his walks in, I would suggest that you concentrate on indoor activities. Play fetch with him or tug of war. These activities expend energy and therefore will burn Kcal. I personnaly prefer to have a little bit of fat on my puppies. That way in case they do get sick and cannot eat for whatever reason, they have energy stored that can be readily used by the bodies organs. IMO I would keep him on the puppy food until his 10-12 months, but as I said, increase his activity as well. Best of luck |
........... and by the way, he is adorable!:) |
Thanks! We do play indoor fetch and tug of war. Both are his favorite games! |
Overweight The day my Lucy gave birth to 6 puppies, she weighed 16 lbs. We had her fixed and now, I'm not kidding, she weighs about 25 lbs. She has to be the fattest Yorkie in the world. We call her "Fat Princess" |

Take into consideration the standard size for a lhasa is 14 - 18 pounds...much larger than a yorkie. I never feed any of my puppies...puppy formula food. It's fine to switch him over now as you're right...it's a higher calorie formula and if he doesn't expend all those calories...it will end up as fat. |
