A Little Concerned. Hey all, My little Cujo didnt seem to be himself today. I took him out for a potty at 3:30am (first time doing so), and he didnt stop barking till around 6:30(when i went down to take him out of his crate). He didn't nap again until 9 am and woke up around 11. Took another mini nap around 1pm-2pm We played for a while and he didn't end up taking a nap until roughly 5 pm and woke up at 7. Anyways its 10 am now and hes been pretty lathargic for quite a while all day. It's 10 pm and hes just so quiet, doesn't realy want to play or anything. I'm just a little concerned for him. He's been going to the washroom eating, drinking and everything else ok! His nose is cold and wet as well. Could be normal, but ive never felt his nose before haha Am I being overconcerned? He's only 9 weeks old. Also, should I be waking him at 3 am if he sleeps fine through the night? (12-6:30ish) Thanks folks, Joe |
At such a young age you really need to feed him every couple hours throughout the day to prevnt hypoglycemia, which can be fatal. Its really important these young pups don't get over-stimulated. If he's sleeping though the night I sure wouldn't wake him, that will just start the habit of waking up every night and wanting out. If he's still lethargic after a couple good meals and a good nights sleep a trip for this very young pup to the vet may be warranted. Good luck! |
I saw the vet this previous wednesday...he also did a stool sample and gave him a clean bill of health! It just seems around 8-9 pm he just gets a little lethargic. I'm such a worry body, haha I feel bad for my future kids. |
I would give him some nutri-cal or karo syrup right away just to be safe. |

Please, please,please watch him all night. You will need to get up every couple of hours to check and make sure he's still conscious. Is he a good eater? What is he eating and how much/often? It's important that he eat a good food source every few hours. Don't feed too much nutrical, it can suppress the appetite. It's best to follow the nutrical with food. Keep in mind it can also take days to fully recover from an attack. |

You may not need the vet in the AM, sometimes it can do more harm then good. HOWEVER, if he isn't 100% he may need some fluids with glucose, but I think if he just started going hypoglycemic and you caught it in time, he needs to eat every two hours and get plenty of rest. No playing!! If you don't have nutrical (which you may want to pick up the next time you're at petsmart/petco) honey or karo syrup are good substitutes. What exactly is he eating (brand and amount) and how much does he weigh? |
He weighs roughly 2 pounds! He is eating Royal Canin Mini puppy! I generally eyeball it but hes eating around 30 pieces of it! |
Well it's good he's not *super* tiny. Like I said, the important thing is for him to eat every two-three hours for the next couple weeks. Being soooo young, they can crash so easy. If he's eating the dry food well, you should be fine. You could add some canned to his diet to really get him eating, but I don't know if I would go that route right now. Keep an eye on him and keep him eating, he should be fine. A bit of karo in their water can keep their sugar up as well. Let me know if you need anything else. |
Does this mean I should be waking him up when he's sleeping at night to feed him as well? And if I'm feeding him every 3 hours, should these be smaller portions than what I use to feed him throughout the day? Thank you so much for your help, I almost had a heart attack. |

Honestly, about the feeding, I would leave kibble down for him 100% of the time, and maybe feed him canned, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc several times a day for another week or two. If you can't free feed, let him eat as much as he wants 4-5 times a day. After the 12 week mark you *should* be home free. These little guys are capable of such HUGE upset to our lives. |
