eating out of my hand ONLY! Libbie for some odd reason will not eat out of her bowl. At first I thought it was because she was too tiny so I put some of her food on a flat plate. She'll eat it if I touch her food....but only two bites then turns are look at me. But if I have it in my hand while feeding her she'll eat the whole thing. I'm not sure why she does that... is she ever going to eat out of her bowl? Would I have to hand feed her all the time? Does your fur baby do this? And how do you break this habit....? |
Milo would only eat from my hand too. I don't know what it was that broke him...He eats out of his dish now:p |
Jasmine did that when we first brought her home at 8 weeks. I think she was just unsure of herself at first. But, now she is 13 weeks old now and she eats out of her bowl. She still enjoys for me to put a little kibble in my hand sometimes as a treat though. |
My Shih Tzu used to want to be hand feed. She likes to be spoiled. I had to stop hand feeding her to get her to eat out of her bowl. My veterinarian said she would eat out of the bowl when she gets hungry and she did. |
Actually some dog trainers recommend you touch all your dog's food, because this gives the dog your scent, and the dog learns he gets food from you. I think some dogs think if they are getting food from their "mother" it's safe to eat. I actually give Joey quite a bit of his food by hand because we do training with his food. I couldn't use "treats" anymore because he was getting chunky. You could use the food to teach some basic training if you like. You can also start to give a piece of food and "accidentally" drop one on the floor, or a paper plate. When she eats the food praise her and say "yes." Continue giving food, and accidentally dropping other pieces, until she's more comfortable with the plate. I also throw an object and have Joey return it to me for a piece of food, so he gets a little exercise while he's eating. Some people free feed, and this means having food available at all times, and many breeders recommend this at least till 6-8 months because dogs go through growth spurts, and some days require more food than others. |
I tried to answer the thread about someone having trouble getting their dog to eat. Something happened, and it didn't post. My Yorkie, Tucker was sick a couple of weeks ago. I began feeding him by hand. I do it consistently now. I feel sort of guilty about it, but he's my baby. I have lots of free time. He's so sweet. If he is hesitant about eating it I say "Be a good boy, Tucker", and he almost always eats what I have in my hand. When he's full, he turns his head. Tucker's servant |
When we first got Lola she did the samething, but now she eats out of her dish. |

When I first got Pebbles, she too would only eat from my hand, but now she eats from her bowl. But she grabs one piece and then runs away with it and then comes back for more she doesn't stay at the bowl. I try and stay at her bowl with her so she stays and eats but that doesn't work either to much for her to do I guess, she is always on the go. I also changed her food she did not like Royal Canin. |

Dolly's got the same problem. she would only eat when I hand feed her, and on top of that, she is a picky eater! I don't really mind hand feed, but Im just worried that what if someday Im not around, is she gonna starve herself??? that drop food idea is great, gonna give that a try! |

And I didn't buy her because she was going to be 'super tiny'. I got her because the breeder told me that this litter was going to bigger than her other yorkies ( I read about how smaller yorkies have a lot of health issues and what not so I wasn't looking for a tiny). But it turns out I put a deposite on the smallest girl (she had 4 other sisters)....and she stayed small! But I still love her reguardless :p |
