Heartworm? What kind of preventive medicine do you use? How much does it cost? |
I don't use as it is not necessary in most parts of the country. There has not been a case of canine heartworm in San Diego in over thirty years and my vet says those pics they show are from the worst case they ever saw 30 years ago just to scare people into thinking they need to give their dog medicine for it. I would find a homeopathic vet in your area and ask if there are cases in your area and what his/her advice would be on the subject. |
My mom is scaring the crap out of me over here. She is upset that I "didn't think" to give it to Stewie. hmmm... |

Wow where do you live? We live in GA and it has to be used here. We use Interceptor. Monthly pill for Mollie it is I want to say $25 for a 6 month supply. Maybe not quite that much maybe between $20 -25. Been a while since I bought any. If you don't have it in GA. There is almost a 100% chance of your animals getting infected. I hear all the time from the local vets and humane society that they are treated animals for heartworms or that some have died from heartworms. It may depend on where you live just like you said. I would just ask the local humane society or a vet and see if you really need it where you are. |
My dogs take heartquard. |

Heartworm disease in Georgia I found this about heartworm disease in Georgia so it does appear to be a prevalent disease even in indoor dogs.http://www.tracylanddvm.com/html/heartworm.html |
Here is a citation for a homeopathic, natural approach to heartworm prevention and/or treatment.http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.co....htm#heartworm |
I use Interceptor..it cost about 35.00 for a year supply...according to my vet (I'm in NY)...Maximus will have to take it for the rest of his life...but the cost of PREVENTING it is minimal to the cost of treating it and is very bad for the dog...I think it is a good idea...you can also get Revolution which combines the benefits of frontline plus heartworm..I am not sure on the cost though :D |
My vet put Genie on Sentinel. |
Mine are on Sentinel . |

I have mine on Heartguard. I live in Northern California and I know its something to be concerned about in my area.. Sitting in my vet's office in the last few months I've talked to 2 people who had their dogs in for treatment. It was very expensive for them. I order my heartguard off the net. Alot cheaper than purchasing from my vet. |
Here is another article about the times of the year to give heartworm medication since it has to be 60 degrees for the mosquito to inject the worm and so, in Chaicago, for instance you only have to give it certain months of the year when it is warmer. I found it intriquing. They also use Black Walnut instead of drugs as a preventive. http://www.clickersolutions.com/arti...lated_Info.htm |
I use Heartguard Plus. I have seen what the heartworms does to a dog  and I would never take any chances. Whether there has been any reported cases or not.... My babies mean more to me than that... if there are mosquitoes, there is always the risk. It is $25.00 for a year supply with a $5.00 rebate. Not to mention it effective on other worms with the exception of tape worms. |
Heartworm I give my yorkie and my lab Interceptor for heartworm. I use Advantix for the fleas. When we first got our lab, my breeder told me she preferred to use the heartworm pill and then the topical treatment for fleas. She said that she felt she was poisoning her dogs otherwise. So I have always done that with Maddie (my lab). When we first got Sadie (a month ago), the vet gave me some Sentinel, but this month I asked for the Interceptor and got some Advantix. I had a friend who used Revolution on her dog and he couldn't take it. It hurt his skin. She is now using the Interceptor and Advantix and he doesn't mind it at all. He still gets afraid when she comes after him to put the Advantix on, but when she puts it on him, he seems ok. He finds out that it doesn't burn the way the Revolution must have for him. He probably has very sensitive skin (he is a mixed breed of some sort). Just my 2 cents. Good luck with whatever you choose. |
I would never even consider not using a heartworm med. The med is not really a vaccine but it kills any larva that have built up in the dog in the past 30 days.. so it is not worth taking the chance of having to treat one of my babies. I have seen a golden retriever that was treated for heartworm and he lost his teeth and almost died from the treatment. I will never forget that. I use Ivermectin which is the active ingredient in Heartgard. My dogs get 70 mcg every month..it takes only 1 bite of an infected mosquito and the baby can be affected for life. Scares me!!! |

I am sure he is fine. My dogs have been out of the heartworm medicine for about a month. I need to go pick some up. They dont go outside that much so I think they only have a small chance of getting it anyway. |
I don't think he already has it, but if it so serious, deadly and sneaky, I guess I wouldn't know until it was too late, right? |
