Liver disease My 5 yr old Maltese Ellie is very sick with liver disease, she also has pancreatic insufficiency. She was doing well until late January when she caught Lepto. She did well on the meds and I thought she had pulled through. Two weeks ago she started to have HE symptoms, she is currently on Lactulose and it is helping. She is also on vitamin E, Denosly, and ursodiol and viokase. I am waiting for UCDavis to reformulate her homemade diet so she is eating Hills LD. Ellie does not have a shunt. Any suggestions would be appriciated. Cathy |
I will keep Ellie in my prayers. Get well soon Ellie! |
Sorry to hear that. My pom went into liver failure from medicine she was on for her Cushing's Disease. We stopped the medicine and the vet put her on some liver medicine and she recovered from the liver disease after about a year and no longer needed the medicine. I will keep Ellie in my prayers |

Over the years I've seen too many pets and people get much worse from taking medications when it just wasn't necessary. I'd seek the help of an Holistic Vet. |

I'm so sorry about your Maltese. Did the lepto cause the liver disease or did she already have liver disease before? Do you know what kind she has? My yorkie had a liver biopsy a month ago. |

Is the lepto the liver disease or does she have another type of liver disease also? I don't like overmedicating either but everything here looks right to me, especially for the EPI. |

You can add milk thistle for more liver support. A homemade diet could possibly help quite a bit as long as the right kind of protein is used. Is this the canned or dry L/D? With the lactulose, it should produce two soft but firmed bowel movements daily. Lepto is a horrible disease but so is the vaccine. I think if the MVD is severe enough to use all the things you listed, overvaccinating is a major concern. Vaccines are very hard on the liver. What vaccines does she get and how often? How about flea and heartworm meds? Some owners with liver compromised dogs really like VSL #3 (human probiotic) or Azodyl (specific to kidney function if there are any UTIs or stones). I don't have experience with either but one or both "may" help. There is a group of people on Yahoo who can really help you with this. I don't have the link right now but somebody should be along to give it to you. |
