How to get ticks off of puppies? I'm sure this has been asked before but I would really like to get these 2 ticks off my pup now. What is the best way? It is right under his neck and he won't be still. I dabbed some vinegar on it hoping it would back out. Not for sure if it did Rosco won't be still. Any suggestions. How much do they have to weigh to have tick medication? He is 2.4 oz. Also the vet said to bathe them with Dawn dishwashing liquid for fleas does that work on ticks too?:( |
if you have a tweezer i'd use that, however, you need to be careful with pulling ticks off, since you dont want the head to become embedded into their skin, but if you cant get it out, it will usually come out. I would really ask your vet about giving your dog anything for the first time. There is a certain age/weight for flea and tick preventatives. I don't think dawn dish soap will help with ticks. good luck. |
Jackson hasn't had a tick YET. But my mom's dog has gotten them before and we used to just take a paper towl and get a good grasp on the tick and pull it out. You have to be sure to get it all out, as sometimes the head will stay in. |
This is what I do: I dab the area with alcohol. Clean a pair of tweezers tips with alcohol. Grip the tick as close to the head (pups skin) as possible and gently but firmly pull out the tick. If I missed parts and they are still sticking out I put on alcohol ad try to get them with the tweezers. After I clean the area with more alcohol (I squeeze the cotton ball) and then pay it dry & then put on Neosporin (3x antibiotic ointment). If part of the head is stuck usually the next day there is a scab and I pull that off with the again alcoholed tweezers and the tick parts come with it (usually). Put on the alcohol and ointment again. I keep alcohol and ointment on it for a few days. There are some videos on YouTube too. YUCK!!! TICKS! |
Definitely get them off now! The longer they are on the more chance there is of them spreading Lyme's or Erlichia diseases. The chances are greatly reduced if you can get them off within the first 2-8 hours. Make sure you grasp the head of the tick, not the body, as you can squeeze the deadly bacteria into the dog. After you can apply antibacterial ointment on the wound, this will help healing. Good luck! |
The Tick Twister or something similar is probably the safest way. |
I have heard of the alcohol as well, they can suck alot of blood, so try to get them off asap |
Omg, this thread freaked me out, lol. One thing about freezing half the year is I've never seen a tick nor flea in Alberta. Poor babies and mommies for dealing with those awful things. |
