Swallowed a fake fingernail... This is probably a pretty stupid question, but I'm a worrier, so I just need to ask. Last night my mom came over and one of her fake nails fell off. She put it on the coffee table, and when we weren't looking, Miles must have gotten it and (I fear) eaten it. We looked everywhere for it. I thought he might have just chewed on it for a while and left it someplace, but it's nowhere to be found. It's been 12 hours now, and he hasn't thrown anything up, he pooped like normal this morning, and he's acting like normal. Is this something I should be worried about? How long until he would "pass" it if he swallowed it? |
How big is Miles? The larger he is, the less likely it is to create a blockage. But if he's tiny, I'd go to the vet for an ultrasound or x-ray just to be certain. |
He will probably pass it, I would think. Just watch him for any signs of illness, difficulty with pooping, etc. |
He's 5 pounds. In addition to a blockage, I'm also worried about the nail polish that was on it! It wan't fresh (my mom painted them like two weeks ago), but still...I'm scared that the dried polish on the nail could poison him... |
Well, I'm a worrier, too, so I'd be taking him to the vet if he was mine...unless I saw that fingernail in his poo! I wouldn't worry much about the polish. Once it is dry, the harmful vapours are gone and it is unlikely to be any more harmful, chemically speaking, than the nail itself. Mu worry would be a blockage. Not to be an alarmist, but a former tenant of mine had a Jack Russell that died from eating bits of hard plastic stuff. Stupid woman knew he was doing it and didn't stop him or take him to the vet until he was too sick to save. I don't take chances with my babies...if he was mine, I'd take him to the vet just to be sure. |
