Liver Shunt & Bile Acid Test My baby's breeder said both the parents had the bile acid test and tested negative. Should I still be concerned enough to get my puppy tested? The vet I found seemed to know a lot about yorkies and does the test for $100 on top of the $45 for the wellness exam. |

Yes, still get a BAT done on your puppy as normal parents can still produce a puppy with a shunt. Until Dr. Center finds a genetic marker for shunts, the protocol is for all affected breeds like Yorkies to have BAT's once they reach twenty weeks old. |

I have heard different things... |
Manolos parents have both been tested and nothing has shown in the blood line, Manolo is the first and has a mild case of MVD. I have switched his food to low proteins and he is doing Fantastic. Yes I recomend everyone to have this test done since its so common in small breeds....Keep us posted... |
Forgot, and Bravo to your Vet for knowing about Yorkies....Yes test.... |
But should I do it right away at the first exam (10 weeks) so that if something were wrong I could work with the breeder right away. Or wait for the 20 weeks? There is a 1 year health guarantee and I'm sure she would work with me if something came up within that time, but it would be nice to get it done at the 1st appointment and be sure she is healthy. :) |
10 weeks is too young to have the test done...you need to wait until the 20 week mark. Even though none of my Biewers have shown any symptoms I still had BAT's run on all of them...I just think it's a good breeding practice. Everyone is normal  |
