Personally, I would deviate from the two in one meds....just from personal experience of them not working. I have my two on K9 Advantix and Interceptor. You can use the equivalent of Interceptor, Sentinel, differing only by the flea larvae killing component of Sentinel. K9 Advantix also kills larvae. Not a single scratch or bug on either one. Frontline has stopped working completely in my area....three residents have switched to K9 Advantix. This is another problem. Many of the flea preventatives are not working anymore....the fleas are building up an immunity. Hope this helps....Lisa, Lilly & Jumbo Jesse

I have a sample of Advantage multi from my vet for our puppy, so I think I will use that for this month. I went on 1800petmeds.com and did a comparison of all the products and It seems that K9 Advantix and Interceptor are the best. I have been using Heartgard plus and Frontline on our 9lb yorkie and it has been fine, but why not use the best:p!!! So I will start them both on that combo I think!

WOW! I just noticed on 1800petmeds that Sentinel 6 dose is $60.99 :eek:while Interceptor 6 dose is $24.99 (Heartgard is about the same). Does anyone know why there is a huge price difference? :confused:

Most likely b/c Sentinel is a combo pill for both flea prevention and heart worms in 1 pill.

I've used interceptor, for the past two months...It's for heartworms and intestinal parasites...It's supposed to be good for toy breeds...The breeder told me to use Adams mist for fleas, but we haven't had any (yet), so I'll cross that bridge, when I need to...I haven't researched Adams, so this is not an endorsement...However, it seems my previous vet (now retired) recommended it...I'm still going to research the whole flea thing...Off the top of my head, I think going after a holistic approach is well worth trying first....All the Best to You and Snick!

It's not that you can't, it is just that their little bodies probably have a very hard time processing these strong drugs. That's why some break it up. Whenever giving something the first 1, 2 or even 3 times, it is best to split it up in case tehre is a reaction. Then you know what it is from.

OMG, I've always given Bailey his at the same time, I had no idea it wasn't a good thing to do. I will stop doing that immediately!

:confused: OK, I read all of these threads and I still can't decide is frontline plus OK to give my Baby or not? He is on the Heartguard and Frontline currently but I don't want to cause him to die for flea prevention. Where did it say frontline could cause death? Should they get it monthly? Help Please.

Sadly, any of these medications can cause death.
There is no good way around heartworm meds.
As for flea meds, are you using it as a precaution or does your Yorkie actually get fleas? Frontline may be able to be applied every three months and offere the same protection as monthly dosing.

Chilly did have Fleas in the past that is why I had to do something preventative. I went to the frontline website and it is not clear if I can give it every 3 months? How can I find out, just try it myself? I just can't afford for him to get fleas because of who I live with. It's tough. What would you do?

I think it is on the package or package insert.
It says that giving it monthly is recommended but giving it every three months may be enough. Since it is very cold here for a few months a year and the house gets sprayed for bugs, I rarely have to give it. Right now I only give it if I need to though and then everything has to be washed, vacuumed, etc.

I think I posted before that I hate the goop that you have to apply with many of these and also I like to bathe Snick about every 2 weeks and since he is 3.5 lbs, I don't feel that the prescribed amounts apply to such a tiny doggy. I like how Sentinel has weight appropriate dosage and precscriptions. I am going to give it him during the warmer months and then just heartguard during the cool mnts. I also bought coconut oil to apply to him which aids in flea control and killing a possible flea. (different thread)

I hope I'm doing the right thing....ugh!

If you want the same heartworm preventative year-round but don't want to give flea meds year-round, you could do Sentinel in the summer and Interceptor in the winter.

Interceptor and Sentinel's smallest dose is for dogs 2-10 pounds but at least as far as the heartworm part of the drug goes (milbemycin oxime), only one-fifth of the amount they put in the pill would work. They supposedly add teh extra four-fifths for intestinal parasites and in my opinion, Yorkies don't need to be dewormed monthly. :( This 1/5 4/5 thing is Googlable.

All that to say people don't like Heartgard because of the dosing when Interceptor/Sentinel appears to be just as bad. Milbemycin oxime does come in a safeheart dose (only enough to kill heartworm larvae) but it isn't available here.
