Heartworm medicine. What's a good heartworm medicine to put Jackson on? He's currently on Frontline for fleas & ticks. But I assume I need heartworm medicine as well? Is it a monthly pill or something? Also, is there anything that treats everything (fleas, ticks, worms, etc) or is heartworm medicine always separate? Thanks. I'm still learning :) |
I like Interceptor for heartworm protection. They have products that do both, but I prefer to keep them separate since both are pesticides. I do heartworm on the 1st of the month, flea preventative on the 15th. |
My vet recommends Interceptor for Heartworm because it treats other worms as well and the others don't treat for whip worms. |
I like Interceptor for heartworms or Sentinel (Interceptor with something to stop fleas from reproducing which you really don't need if you use Frontline Plus). There are a couple that do everything and I would definitely not recommend them. |
Interceptor here as well... |
I use Revolution and canex. |
From my reading on this subject, if you going to use products to kill heartworm then your probably safest using Heartguard with Ivermectin...The Ivermectin would kill off the microfilariae slowly which is the safest way for your pet. Some of the other products use ingredients that would kill off the microfilariae faster and that is not a good thing......It's best not to use a heartworm med. that also has worming med.s in them it's extra toxic insecticides your pets can do without. Why expose them to them when they have no worms? Makes no sense at least for the pet..... You don't need to start administering this until your weather has a temp. of at least 64 degrees day and night. The mosquito won't survive so there is no chance of transmission of heartworm. The vets also tell you to give a dose once every 30 days but they have their own agendas for doing so.There has been studies done and this product is effective for 45-60 days....... Here is a link that has a brief explanation on heartworm, there is two maps you can blow up...The numbers in the maps let you know when to start and when to stop so your pet is not exposed to the toxic effects of the heartworm meds. unnecessarily......
