Tap water Vs. Bottled water?? So i purchased my puppy last week and the breeder was feeding her well water and when i brought her home not knowing what she was drinking before i just started to feed her bottled water and she started to have diherea and everthing i brought her to the vet yesterday not knowing it was the water change doing this... now i live in town and our tap water is full of clorine and stuff i talk tot he breeder today and she said i should be giving her the tap water either way thats what is good for her?? should i give her the tap water even though it is city water?? |
I purchased a large under the counter filter system for everyone's water at Lowes. Plus we give them ice in their water from the filtered ice maker in my frig. Don't know if that helps answer your question. It's just what works for us. |
Have you checked her for giardia? Are you sure she wasn't runny while at the breeder's? Tap water is generally fine in Canada. Filtered nicely, etc., however, at least here in B.C. it has been brought up recently how in spite of our amazingly regulated quality city/tap water, we are being poisoned by the old lead pipes that are transporting the water to your home. To avoid lead poisoning, etc., people are advised to install a filter in the house as that's cheaper than replacing the pipes underground. The choice of material being used for new pipes going through are also now up for debate. Change of water may cause problems, but I don't think it's long-term. Personally, I've never had issues with feeding water from different sources, but I do recall reading about that on here where it seems to have affected a pup. What has your vet concluded after running tests on her? Did you get her a fecal exam? |
yes she got a full exam and everything he said she has Campylobacteriosis and i got anti biotics for it and everything but i contacted the breeder today to let her know that maybe her other pups have it as well and she is convince that it is the change in water that caused it...this Campyl.. thing is very easy to cure and nothing serious but still the breeder is on my case for me to change to tap water so i just want to make sure its ok for me to do it?? |
You were fine with drinking from the bottled water, right? No cramping, diarrhea or fever for the past week or since you've been using that particular brand of bottled water? Has there been a recall on the water? I'd hate to make accusations, especially as I don't know you or your breeder, but I would suspect it's either her contaminated well-water passing the bacteria or one of her pups anyway. Some people would hate to admit to the mistake being from their end, and I'm sure she doesn't want you requesting compensation or a refund or overreacting and so forth. Luckily, your little one has gotten her treatment. :) Glad you got it checked out. As for water, I think either would do. If it would make you feel better, feed her tap, as I'm sure it'll make your breeder feel better about it since she insists that's the cause. Here are older threads addressing the same ailment your pup has: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...ate-feliz.html and also http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ng-around.html. |
As for what people feed their dogs on here, it ranges from unfiltered tap, to filtered tap, to bottled spring to bottled distilled and so far, any of the choices have proven to be as safe as can be. :) |
We have well water here but it's through a filter, and that's we've always given our dogs. |

i always drink bottled water myself since i thinkt he city water is so gross so i figured it would be the same for the puppy and yeah about what my puppy had i told the breather she got it from cross contaminating with the other pups food etc since they are so young but she didnt belive me... but at least i got her some meds and she is fine already...i think i might keep her to bottled water since thats what i drink it makes me feel more safe for the thought of her drinking the same thing...thanks for you input :) |
I'm on city water, but give the boys the filtered stuff from the fridge. When we go out of town ton vacation or just to the cabin, I usually give them bottled. No real reason, just what I have always done and it has worked well for us. |
