Lyme disease shot :confused: Do you think it is necessary to give a puppy the Lyme disease shot? I live in the city, but she will be in the park at times. Does this guard against complications from mosquitoes bites also? If you beleive it is necessary, how old should a puppy be when she gets it? Thanks for all your help. |

I cannot remember how old they need to be, but they get the one vaccine, and then 2-4 weeks later get the 2nd one, and then its a yearly vaccine. I get it for Buddy yearly because we live in a high risk area. Deer walk around like domestic dogs. However, I have heard it does not prevent a dog from getting lymes but possibly not a really bad case. I am nervous about not getting it. |
Occasionally the vaccine may be worth getting but there are very few areas in the country where this is the case. Infection and disease are different and just because dogs are testing positive for lymes doesn't mean they have the disease (get the symptoms, etc.). There are risks to it like every other vaccine. It is possible that it the vaccine will be linked to kidney disease (see veterinarypartner.com) because of one of the strains in the vaccine I guess. It really shouldn't even be considered for most dogs so just be careful. I have also seen reports of the vaccine causing lymes symptoms. |
I live right next to the town Lyme, CT where Lyme disease was first found. Ticks are a big problem in my area but I will not let my puppy Piper get the Lyme Disease innoculation. My first Yorkie received the Lyme vaccine and within 10 days he was real sick with Lyme Disease. The next year he got The Lyme Disease shot again. Within 10 days he had Lyme Disease again. The same thing happened the following year. The next year I wouldn't let Chipper have the vaccine again. He lived to be 13 years old and he never had Lyme Disease again. When Piper was due to have the Lyme vaccine I told the vet I was convinced that Chipper kept getting Lyme from the shot. The vet said that it was quite possible and didn't recommend the shot for a tiny Yorkie puppy. |
piepiper your post was very interested, well if you live in a high risk area I guess you should do it. I did it but it was my personal choice |
