diamond naturals dog food i was just wondering is anyone here uses Diamond Naturals Dog Food? I looked it up on dogfoodanalysis.com and it got 3 out of 6 stars so it seems like a semi decent food. It doesn't use any by-products or corn. Now I know Diamond had a huge recall about a year ago so thats a little scary. And the regular low end Diamond is not a good food. I also read that Diamond makes Taste of the Wild (which i really liked but they dont make a puppy food and i think the kibble would be too big) and also that they made Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul food.... so does anyone have any opinions on Diamond Naturals?? Thanks in advance!! |

the taste of the wild is what i originally looked at. do you think the kibble size is ok for a puppy though? i was prob going to switch to TOTW once he was bigger.... |
I would NEVER EVER knowingly feed a food that was manufactured at a Diamond Dog Food Plant. That is why I no longer feed Canidae. As soon as the food started to be produced at the Diamond plant, the quality went down the drain. Not only that, but several years ago dogs started dying from one (or more) varieties of Diamond Dog Food and their was way too long of a delay before they started pulling the food. The small farm supply store I purchase horse food from used to sell Daimond food - which was one of the only foods that Boo the Boxer could eat with her sensitive stomach. The store owner called me and warned me. He also told me that Diamond Foods would NOT refund for the tainted food, only replace it with new food. I cannot support a company that does not support it's customers any better than that. |
how can i find out what other brands are made by the diamond brand or in the diamond plant? |

I just looked real quick on the bag, I didn't see diamond on there, unless it's because I'm so tired I just missed it |
Finding a dog food has been my absolute biggest issue with getting a puppy. I of course want something good for him but my options are somewhat limited as I only really have one PetSmart and one little pet store (they dont sell actual puppies) in like a half hour driving distance form my house. It's so hard!! and to hear so many contradicting things on some foods that some people love and others say no way! (no saying thats happening in this thread at all, i really appreciate everyone who is helping me) but i see it a lot when reading back through old posts. The recall thing definately scares me. And I read that a lot of people like Natural Balance dog food... which just had a recall and i saw in an article about the recall in usatoday that some of natural balance dog foods are packed at the Diamond Dog Foods... I feel like my head is going to explode and i'm never going to find a good food :( |

Just find something that sounds good and if the pup likes it, then keep with it. I know exactly how you feel. |

Dry Puppy Food |
hmmm the halo does look like a good food. does anyone here use this??? i get nervous about the kibbles being too big, has anyone ever seen the size of halo puppy food bites??? thanks guys!!!! :) |
I'm also thinking Blue Buffalo...... how about experiences with this?? Sorry I'm all over the place, so many different things are going through my head!! Thanks Again! |
A couple of my friends use the blue buffalo. I really don't worry about the pieces being too big, how big is your pup? My little one has never had any trouble eating any of her kibbles, and for some reason, mine tend to like the bigger kibbles. I would def. go with the halo if I had less dogs to feed |
taste of the wild, is made at diamond foods. When you request a sample from them the email says diamond foods. Its a meduim size kibble, the ingredients are excellent and very reasonable, its all life stages food and when Tucker was 8 weeks old he ate it with no problems. The diamond food recall was 3 years ago and it included grains. Alot of the foods they make now, dont include grains. Not to mention almost all dog food brand has been recalled for one reason or another. I fed taste of the wild but after a few months of them being on it, my dogs stopped tolerating it. They were very gassy and pooping a ton. But I would still recommended it to anyone who asked about it. Not all dog foods work for every dog. :). MY dogs didnt like chicken soup and they got terrible diarreah from canidae. I use dogswell now,my dogs love it and they have never looked so good, but its quite expensive and getting harder and harder to find, so I think in the next month or so I will be back on the hunt for a new food for like the 7th time this year. Trying to find a good quality food that your dog will eat for a reasonable price is so hard. Good luck!! :) |

It isn't the fact that Diamond had a recalls that bothers me. It happens. It is why they had one. Their corn either wasn't being inspected OR it was inspected and let through anyway after knowing that it was contaminated (can't remember what one it was but it is on the internet). In my opnion, that is inexcusable, so feeding something manufactured at Diamond would not be my first choice. I had no idea that NB was made there. Do you have a link? |

I was getting mine from our local feed store and online at petfooddirect, because they still have it on sale. My local feed store stopped selling it, when I asked why the woman said that it was because they were having issues with the comapny. My guess is that they werent selling it fast enough. I live in a fairly small town and most of people that live here cant afford that kind of dog food. I was pretty upset about it, I will continue to get it online untill it goes off sale, right now I have stock pile of it. lol. Once it goes off sale I will start looking for something else to feed my dogs again. :(. I really cant afford the asking price of the food and shipping costs. |

This correspondence was in early 2008. "With regards to the Recall that happened back in April 2007, it was our Venison and Brown Rice Formula (Dry, Canned and Treats) that were recalled NOT our Sweet Potato and Venison. We no longer carry the Venison and Brown Rice Formula, as it has been reformulated to the Sweet Potato and Venison..." [Kathy Sun, B.S., Customer Service Representative, Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc.]. The USAToday article carlyn6884 read was probably this one dated back in 2007 during the rice concentrate/gluten recall when NB mentioned where their foods were packed: "Wilbur-Ellis CEO John Thacher said his company sold the concentrate to five pet-food makers, but that most of it went to two firms. One of the primary companies was Diamond Pet Foods, which packs some of the Natural Balance product but doesn't use the concentrate in any Diamond-made foods, says Diamond spokesman Jim Fallon. The other major customer, which Thacher would not name, tested the rice protein and found no melamine, Thacher says. Natural Balance's rice protein concentrate is mixed with venison meal, Thacher says." (Diamond doesn't use it in their products?? Except for Chicken Soup Puppy canned and their Lamb and RICE canned, I guess, as well as their Nutra line of dry lamb meal & rice kibble). The venison meal might explain why the NB Venison and Green Pea Dry Cat Food was affected in spite of it supposedly being a "grain free allergy formula with a single source protein and single source carbohydrate" and this "significant formula change not reflect in the product labeling or website." "The recall initially included only two formulas — Natural Balance Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food (all date codes) — but was expanded on April 20, 2007..." The general consensus here on this blog seems to be that essentially NB "rents the space" over at Diamond and over at American Nutrition except if you read up until the end of the posted comments. "Natural Balance is saying American Nutrition put rice protein concentrate in their foods without their knowledge and American Nutrition is saying their make the food according to Natural Balance’s recipe…" However, NB representatives state that "Canned food is manufactured at American Nutrition in Utah, with Natural Balance machinery, by Natural Balance employees. Natural Balance personnel are the only ones to work with the machines and products. American Nutrition in Utah packages the products." (cited from near the top of same site). In either event, since that incident, NB has stated they've hired more personnel to test their products. The link phfgkl provided shows that during the recall for their canned food, it wasn't just limited to the venison formula. |
Oh, right, regarding the "co-packing" bit and the use of NB's own machinery, actually, it got clarified by the Animal Nutrition department's Jennifer Freeman (dated April 3, 2007, which I believe was prior to official recall though I could be mistaken) as follows: "What this means, is that we use their machinery to manufacture our OWN products. We also have our OWN quality control over seeing any manufacturing/production of our products. Further, all of our products are tested prior to production, after production, and then once again at our facility before the product ever leaves for distribution." So they rent the machines, not just the space. |
