Need Advice! Hi everyone! My yorkie, Tim, had poop matted up against his butt when I came home from work yesterday. So, I put him in the bath and worked it out, but it was obviously was hurting him. I couldn't tell if it was hurting him because of the pulling hair or if his skin was irritated, so I checked on him after he was dried off and his butt is now red and swollen. I knew that I should have trimmed the hair on his butt, but kept putting it off, now I'm worried that the how ever many hours with fecal matter on his skin could have caused an infection. It doesn't smell, it is just really red, swollen, and there is a small spot that looks like it's raw. He is favoring it, and not letting me lift his tail to look closely at it. Should I take him to the vet or is this like diaper rash that will heal? What should I look for to see if there is an infection? |

My Woody has a cottony coat and has the same problem if I don't trim his backside. Try another bath to make sure there is no more poo, Woody likes it when I cup my hand under his tail and let the warm water soak his bottom. Try to keep an eye on it, if it's not better tonight or tomorrow morning, I would call your vet to see if they feel Tim should be seen. Woody has always been better and with almost no irritation within 6-12 hours tops. Hope Tim feels better soon and don't forget to trim him up today :) |

Will baby butt paste hurt him if he ingests it? I'm at work now, and I've been thinking about him all day. He was just so red and swollen that it surprised me, it couldn't have been more than just a few hours that he had skin contact with his feces. If he hasn't improved by the time I get home today, I will call the vet. Does anyone know what symptoms I should look for if he does develop an infection? |
My little one had a bout of diarrhea, which left her little behind very sore, almost raw, and the vet advised me to use a little polysporin, and then a thin layer of vaseline over that. It healed her in no time. Hope this helps Janice |
Yeah - Tim has a raw spot too. Did you see any swelling on the red area as well? I think it's the swelling that freaked me out the most, though it seems like it would make sense that the irritated skin would be inflamed - it was still seemed so painful :( |
I would double check and make sure that it is not his anal gland that is swollen and inflamed. Does it look like a lump that is swollen on the side of his buttocks, or is it just skin that is red and irritated? |
An update on Tim - the area all around his butt is no longer red and puffy. He still does not like it when I try to lift his tail to check on that sore raw spot, so I can't see how that is doing. I'm not sure if that's abnormal since I've never tried to lift his little tail. So far, it seems that it has gotten better, but the sensitive skin around the anus, and the sore itself is hidden under that tiny little stump tail. I'm not really sure if it's an glad issue, so far, the swelling is gone, and the redness on the areas I can see is gone. Does anyone have any advice on how to get a dog to let you lift his tail? |
I had a problem with my puppy having a raw butt also. I called the vet I trimmed the hair around the butt and put vasoline on it so when she went to bathroom it wouldn't burn. Seemed to do the trick. I wanted put diaper rash med. on it, but vet said they will lick it off and make sick. Vasoline is better. |
