Yorkie is having Back Leg Problems need HELP! Hi All! I have two Yorkies at home:animal36, but one of my babies has hurt his back leg and won’t run around or jump up anymore, he won’t even play with my other dog, he is only 7months. I took him to the vet and they said nothing is broken or dislocated….They gave him a shot for pain and said he should feel better soon. He is still is so much pain though, he always whines/cries when he has to get up from lying down or if my other dog bumps into him. If anyone has any advice that they think could help him, Please let me know. Thanks :) |
Have you checked his paw pads for injury? When you palpate his leg, IS there an actual spot that is tender/hurt? Did they xray? It could be a muscle strain - when this has happened w/ my dogs, they only limp for a day or two. How long has it been? Otherwise, leg pain could be "referred pain" from the abdomen. Is his digestion and stools okay? |
I would find another vet. It sounds like this baby has LP. You need to find a vet that is experience in toy breed dogs. LP can be fixed and your pet will be on the road to being his playful self again. |
I wonder if it is really his leg. Could it be damage elsewhere in his body. Reminds me of the dogs who have Atlanto Axial Subluxation. You may want to do some reading. |

Thanks for the response, His paw pads are fine, when we pushed on the left top hip he did whine a little. He keeps his back legs and feet together when he is standing still, NO limp just won't run or or jump up like he used too. We did x-ray and nothing showed, he is eating and drinking but continues to cry when he has to get up from sitting or if he is bumped. The vet said it's probably just a strain but it has been almost 2 weeks and he still is in pain, I think I should go back again?? Thanks for your help :) |

Many thanks, Loni and Furbabes |
Thank you Yorkiesmiles for PMing me. I am a AAI/AAS mom I have a pup that has Atlantoaxial Instability. This is a condition that affects the vertebra in the neck. Does you baby cry when you try to move his neck/head up and down. When is he crying when looking up and down? Does he walk funny or is he fine once he gets up? I have many questions to ask you but I will let you answer these first or you could check out Petplace.com and put in Atlantoaxial Instability and you will find info on AAI(we call it that for short) Also you can read Babybear's story at Dog profile for Wheelie Boy Babybear® , a male Yorkshire Terrier. Sure hope you baby is feeling well soon. |

Thank you Thank you I am sure here to help as I have a boy with AAI/AAS as well and learned about my yorkies condition through MyBabe4me as well. So together we can help rule this out for you. Please keep YT updated with what is going on you have huge support here...If your baby has AAI/AAS there are many treatments and choices but it is very serious and you need to act quickly. I do advise you to get a second opinion and have them look at the neck very well. When humans have leg pain it can start in the back or the neck same thing with a YORKIE... HUMAN WITH HAIR:rolleyes: SO start at base 1 and cover all your bases. Please do not panic. Take one step at a time and I believe you will have answers to your delimma in no time. This may not be the case with your 7 month old. I hope it is not . I hope it is nothing serious. We are just trying to offer you suggestions and cover all bases GOD BLESS |

If I were you, I would start a new thread with "Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease" (LCP Disease) in the title - you may get more response that way from people who know more about it. Also, I'm sure you can find other info out online. But there may be others on YT who have experienced this in a yorkie or small breed dog. How soon will Vegas have the surgery? Please keep us up to date, so we can pray for him. |
