My baby has fleas!Help I was bushing my Tobi tonight and I saw a few fleas on him. I wanted to know the best thing to use? I wanted advise from all of you here before I used anything. Thank you so much |
I use frontline plus but somentimes, I don't remember when was the last time I use it, but my girls never had a flea, Phoebe couple ticks but long time ago from a big park, that is why we have avoid that park lol:rolleyes: |
Alot of people use dawn dishwashing soap which I would rather use rather than the flea shampoo vacum your house well, laundry your bedding, or where he sleeps, when you vacum throw away your bag the fleas will jump out of it. There are some natural stuff that fleas do not like, cedar and euclplyptus oil, keep running a flea comb through him if you put a saucer with soap in it by a light at nite the flas will jump into it. |
Fleas The heartworm medicine I give my little guy has a flea killer in it |
I've tried all the stuff: dawn, vinegar etc. the only that worked for us was Advantage. The other things only kill on contact and don't keep killing as the eggs hatch in the house. Advantage is applied once a month. I learned to bathe Roxie first and after she dries put it on and don't bathe her again for a good 2 weeks. It says you can bathe them and that it's water proof....I found out that's not really true. I'd put it on Roxie and bathe her within a few days or a week and see fleas again. So I called the Advantage place to see if it was safe to re-apply before the month was up and they gave me suggestions such as to wait longer for bathing. Plus for us the Advantage worked better then the Advantyx. Good luck! |
Thanks so much for the help! I was reading through the post from a while ago and some people said the flea stuff from pet stores were not good to use! Any ideas on this? |
I would use Frontline. If your puppy is small use only 1/2 vial and that will do it.(throw the rest away) I have stretched it out to about 6-7 weeks instead of the once a month with no problem. Holistic flea meds don't work and neither does oil's or dawn detergent for longer than the day it is applied. I would never go without flea medication. Flea infestaton in your home is nothing you would want to go threw. |
I wouldn't use any of the over the counter flea meds-- Hartz and etc. They can be very dangerous to smaller pets. The brands available through vets are generally safer (Frontline, Revolution)... It's also worth noting that if you have a cat in the house as well as your dog, you need to be doubly careful with what brand you choose. Several of the canine flea control products on the market-- the ones that contain permethrin-- can be deadly to a cat if the cat so much as cuddles up next to the dog. Hartz is well known for this problem-- as well as Advantix, which some folks might consider to be safer because it can sometimes be found through veterinary hospitals. |
Oh, and just to clarify-- there's some brands other than the permethrin ones that can cause reactions in kitties. Those are just some of the more common ones. You need to be really careful in any case if you have more than one pet that what you're putting on one isn't going to harm the others. |
what do fleas look like? Are they visible on the fur? Just curious b/c I don't know if charlie has fleas or not but has been scratching himself a lot. thanks. |
Revolution for me We use Revolution. You get three solutions for the price of one. Ticks, Fleas and Heartworm Protection. It's simple and you only have to put it on them once a month. It comes in a vial. We got ours from our vet, but I just found a website online that sells it cheaper. Pet Supplies | Dog & Cat Supplies, Pet Meds | DrsFosterSmith.com Pet Products |
Thank you guys so much for everything! I am new to all this so I have no clue what to do! Thank God for yt!!:) I have no cats so no worries about that. But the lady next door has about 30, so i think thats were they are coming from. I just never thought my baby would get them. Thanks again! Kym & Tobi |
We had some flea problems as well not too long ago. we tried the flea shampoo, it would kill a few of them but it seemed to dry him out, he didnt like it very much at all, it would also make him sneeze. I think it was the smell. but we got some advice to use dawn dishwashing detergent. and it does great. After just a few washes, the fleas were gone. we also made sure we sprayed the house. and washed almost everything. Good luck.:aimeeyork |
i've been noticing the smaller one itching and scratching and we found a flea last night. it spread over to the larger dog and now we have them both scratching themselves in sync. i would take them to the vet to get frontline plus or something, but my wife and i are trying to avoid paying another vet bill after the scare we had with the smaller one a few weeks ago. is there anything (a medicine or a shampoo) being sold at petco or petsmart that does an effective job? i would appreciate any advice. |

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! do not get anything from the stores, esp. HARTZ products! I have seen there flea/tick treatment kill animals. Call your vet! Fiona had fleas for a month, we used dawn dish soap, water bottle with 50% water and 50% white vinegar which worked, you just soak her with that, and let it sit, we had to vaccumm a lot, and even wash her bedding every other day. Hopefully she wont get them again! GOOD LUCK |

Prince has never had a problem with fleas, but just today, I asked his vet about preventative options. I didn't want anything oral...I was leaning towards spot treatments of some sort. The type that Prince had used was Frontline. He had gotten very sensitive to that; I wanted a change. The vet reccommended Animal Pharmaceuticals CM2 Flea and Tick shampoo. It was $16.00 for 16 oz. I gave Prince a bath with it today, and we both really like it. It has a very clean smell and leaves his hair very silky. My husband thought I had used Minksheen. The residual effect is three weeks. This product has to be purchased thru a vet. |
