Please help my Yorkie! Thanks. Recently my 7 year old yorkie-Toy- I think about 4.6-5 pounds is eating grass. He then gets constipated, sometimes throws up the grass and is OK. How can I stop this? His diet is kibble and Cesar food-once a day. Some treats. Is something lacking in the diet to eat grass? Thanks. |

Thanks thanks for your quick reply. He has been to Vet recently re a virual infection-checked out, blood test and all. He is over that now. He seems very well-eating,running about good. I read somewhere,a time ago, that dogs will eat grass sometimes if something lacking in diet-I cannot recall what that was. His diet for most part unchanged, maybe bored with it! If I ate same thing for 7 years I might be eating grass now! |
Did he just start eating grass? Only thing I could think of would be to not let him outside, or when he is outside and around grass, be firm and not let him eat any... |
thanks no from time to time over the years he does. He goes off the deck into our gadren...maybe I should brick the back yard in!!! He has a large area to run/play in and chase the squirrls/racoons /cats/birds etc. They all run when the 5 pound Yorkie comes charging!!! |
Perhaps spray a bit of that Apple stuff spray (name escapes me at the moment) on the grass, and let him sniff it. If he can associate the bad smell with the grass, he may stop eating it so frequently... |

I read long ago, that eating grass for some dogs is completely normal because THEY LIKE IT! Just another veggie for them, like salads are for us. I had English Setters that would KILL for a good head of lettuce! My Pogo (half Dachshund/half Poodle) has always eaten grass and doesn't throw it up. And he has taught little Sir Higgins to eat grass, and he doesn't throw it up either. SO, if your little one isn't throwing it up each and every time, then I say just let him enjoy it! But when you see your vet, do ask him about it. IMPORTANT NOTE: Be careful that he doesn't eat grass that has fertilizers or weed killers on it! Just good ol' organic grass....... |
At the pet store, they sell these little patches of grass that I think are meant to be eaten. Maybe you can buy him one of those instead? At least you know that type of grass is meant for pets. Maybe those are for cats. Hmm...not sure. |
Cats eat grass? All I have EVER seen a cat do is mope around, or poached there staring intently with evil in their little eyes! Can you tell I'm not a cat person? :) |
aaaawwwww......I like kitties! And Don is a cat person. But when we decided to do a lot of traveling, our 2 cats were quite old and did NOT like to ride in the car, so they have gone to live with Don's sister-in-law who has 5 or 6 cats of her own.....They're happy and we get to see them..... I used to grow catnip for my kitties they LOVED that stuff. I had a cute little tailless cat that jumped up and got the plastic bag of dried catnip off the shelf in our utility room. Found her there, COMPLETELY ZONED OUT, and lying on her back with -- I swear -- a SMILE on her little kitty face! ;) |
thanks.... The Yorkie is doing fine, not eating grass after he "cut" the lawn!!! We have done away with the lawn mower now.... |

Edie eats grass when she has an upset tummy. I don't think it is anything to be worried about, unless you recently sprayed the grass with some sort of herbicide or something. |
