Home Cooking Questions I would love to cook for Apple, as I only eat healthy foods, myself...I actually don't eat grains or sugar, and only eat organic...However, I'm afraid I wouldn't balance her diet, since I'm not a dog nutritionist...Is anyone here really up on a balanced home cooked day of food for a yorkie...I have already given her boiled free range chicken (about a tablespoon at a time) and organic spinich (raw - a few leaves), and a tablespoon of kefir in the morning (she loves it, and it's probiotic) but I know she probably needs some grain like brown rice or barley or something? I just wouldn't know what proportions to give her these foods in? Any help, or advice would be greatly appreciated...I work 40 hrs. a week, so baking is out of the question, at this point lol...Apple is 4 1/2 months old, and weighs 2 lbs. 14 oz...She came to me on Eukanuba and is doing well, but I'm all about getting her on home cooked healthy foods...Thanks so much for any info....Love, Maggie & Apple:aimeeyork |
It is always best to talk to a canine nutritionist before homecooking, especially for a pup. She doesn't have to have grains if you don't want her to but she does need certain vitamins and minerals and the diet would be very unhealthy and possibly dangerous without them. |
Exactly, that's why I leave kibble out for her too... |

I do have recipes for Ellie but they use a supplement that is usually only used in dogs with health problems, so it wouldn't really work for you. Be careful about geting a recipe from YT though because it probably wasn't formulated for a pup... |
I recently started homecooking and do half raw and half homecooked. I consulted susan Davis over the phone, as have some other YT members. She comes highly recommended. Ecommerce web hosting solution by eMerchantTech.com |
i would consult with a nutrionist for a well balanced receipe with supplements. We use Susan Davis. Here is her website Holistic Veterinarian Pet Nutritionist Holistic Pet Care |

I too have used Susan Davis- you need a consult based on YOUR dog- the nutritionist needs to calculate K/Cals which are based on a dog's weight. Supplements are also based on weight so it is hard for one person to say to another- this is how you do it.... I home cook for Layla and after she was diagnosed with pancreatitis- we contacted Susan and now have a complete balanced diet with supplements and Layla is doing so well. Susan is wonderful and great to work with! Her consults are all by phone and at a time that is convenient for you! |
