Update on Mia's shunt
 
Mia had her shunt surgery at the UT on Friday and is doing good. She had one large shunt on the outside of the liver. She will remain on a special diet until she has her next bile acid test that will be done in 3 month. Even though she is in pain she is already eating better. Thank all of you for your help. Keep Mia in your prayers.:)

So glad to hear that she did so well! :thumbup:Thank goodness. Well give her a bunch of kisses from us, and tell her we are thinking about her.

I am one week ahead of you with the surgery. Lola had her surgery at UT on Friday, March 6. She is only about 2.5 lbs and her only symptom prior to surgery was that she would not eat. I have had a little trouble getting her to eat since we've been home, but discovered something 2 days ago that works great. I put the Hills LD canned food in the blender with some water and blend it until it is the consistency of baby food, then heat it a little and feed her that...she eats about 1.5 heaping tablespoons 4 times a day - which is a lot for Lola. If your baby is not eating much, try that. I don't know if you ever signed up for the Yahoo group that Dr Tobias is an advisor on, (Liver_Shunt_And_MVD_Support : Liver Shunt & MVD/HMD Support), but you should...it has been invaluable through this whole process for me. Just this morning I've posted several questions and have gotten answers. Good luck to you and Mia...give her a belly rub from me!

I am sooooooooooo HAPPY that Mia's shunt is closed now!!!!

Remember though, she *should* remain on a special diet for life. Just b/c her shunt is closed doesn't dismiss that she has liver disease. If you overwork the liver by feeding her the wrong food, she *can* shoot another shunt and/or acquire MVD.

The RC H14 Kibble or L/D is *really what she should remain eating, even well past a normal BAT. She should NEVER be feed anything that has meat or organs. Low, but quality protein....

They did stress the importance of the low protein diet. I'm going to do exactly what they say.

I hope that your baby does good. Aren't they great at the UT? Did they give you a home made low protein diet recipe? They gave me about 5 different kinds of food for her to try. Don't you just hate the thing around the neck? We are counting the days until we can take it off. Give your baby a kiss from me.

You can get newborn baby onsies to put on her. You may need to cut and sew, but it should cover her belly area so she can not play with the stitches ;)

I took the collar off of her neck because someone told me that I could buy a "onesie" at Babies R Us and cut a hole in it for her tail and she would be more comfortable. It worked like a charm....she was much more comfortable and never once bothered her stitches. Lola is so small that she could hardly lift her head with that collar on. The people at UT said it was fine for her to have the onesie instead and it also kept her warm. I think they have the onsies at Target and Walmart, also, if the collar is bothering Mia. I bought the premie size.

Glad to hear Mia's surgery went well! I will keep her in my thoughts for a quick recovery! :)

P.S. I also have a Mia - Just love that name! :D:D

I am so happy Mia is doing well. Joey had his liver shunt surgery last Wed. I have the onsie on him and it works really well and doesn't seem to bother him at all. Good luck.

Chance has liver shunt surgery this friday at U of Tenn. I'm worried about her not making it through the surgery and recovery, I'm sure everyone that has went through this knows how I feel. How many of you guys have had the surgery on your babies and they are living long, healthy and happy lives?
