Please Help... My baby got her rabies shot and I need some advice I took my babies to the vet at 3:30 today and they gave them their rabies shot. They are 15 weeks old. Kissy is doing fine but I'm concerned about Natasha. She is restless and a bit shaky for lack of a better term. It seems like she is having a bit of a tremmor periodically. I don't know if it's just the shakes with one a little worse now and then or if it's something more. I called the vets office back around 5:00 but they were closed so I called their cell number. They asked me if she had any swelling around the injection site or in her face and I don't see any. They told me to give her a 1/4tsp of Benadryl so and that she would probably sleep for some time after that to help her get through it. She only weighs a little over a pound so I thought that seemed a bit much so I only gave her a half a mil. of it. Should I give her more? They told me to call them if anything changes. Has anyone ever had this happen? Should I take her to the ER? I have never had a dog behave anything other than normally after a shot so I'm shook up right now. Am I just a nervous mom overreacting? |
In my haste I posted this in the wrong area. I'm so sorry. If a moderator would like to move it I would understand. |
They gave some good advice, but I'm not sure why they gave a 15wk, 1 pound dog rabies at this point, yikes. Keep checking for facial/cheek swelling, check gums often - make sure they're pink. You could give Nutrical, honey, karo on its own, as well as sweetening some water and seeing if she'll drink. If she becomes overly shaky, white-gummed, listless (tired is normal) - or worse - I'd get to the ER ASAP. I would have given the 1/4 tsp. Keep us posted! |

A very good friend/breeder sent me this website yesterday. I think everyone should see it. I would never give a 15 week old small pup a rabi shot myself. Infact, my biewer is 9 mos and still hasn't had her rabi shot. She's 2 lbs and strictly inside The Rabies Vaccine for Dogs: Side Effects and Precautions You Can Take |

This is childrens' benedryll correct? This is the formula for dosage....every 8 hours and it's administered via a syringe measuring cc/ml Your dogs body weight times 5 divided by 12.5 = dose in cc/ml To figure out your dogs body weight you have to convert ounces to pounds... EX: a dog that weighs 4 pounds 10 ounces would weigh 4.625 pounds you must take the 10 ounces and divide by 16 then add the 4 pounds... 10 divided by 16 = .625 + 4 =4.625 4.625 X 5 divided by 12.5 =1.85 cc/ml |

Not trying to scare you, but I know someone's puppy who had a reaction after the rabies vaccination...and it wasn't the shot that was the problem. The puppy had liver shunt. I also know a yorkie breeder who gives her puppies benedryll before every vaccination to prevent reactions. |
She's not shaky anymore. She's still restless but not as much. She wants to lay down, get comfortable and rest but she can't. She gets up, moves around and tries again. My babies (skin and fur) are my world and I get upset when there is something wrong with them. I can't thank you all enough for holding my hand with this. |

I administer benadryl prior to any vaccination. |

If it will help to give children's benadryl ahead of time I will do it. She won't be receiving any more shots for some time now but I will keep it in mind for next time. Thank you again. |
