When did you How old was your yorkie when you stared giving them Heartworm medication. Thank:confused: |
Don't remember exactly but it needs to be started before 6 months. If I was to do it over, I'd probably start at 4 or 5 months. |
Our vet started mine on it at 5 months. |
my two oldest started late (grrrrrr another reason why i was so unhappy with my last vet  lol) ... i want to say they were about 8 or 9 months old? thank goodness their heartworm tests came out negative and i got them on - year round - right after my youngest, bree, was started on heartworm at about 16 weeks...my vet wanted her to get to a solid 2 lbs and start right away |
Thanks, Sam is 5 months so I guess I should get started. |
that is a good question...thank you for asking that! |
Around 6 months.... |
Juicy was around 4 months old when she started. The vet waited until she was 3lbs. |
I was at the Vet yesterday and Baxter will start heart worm medicine next visit (10 Days) and he will be 4 months. Walter |
Fiona got started on hers at 4 months old. |
I don't remember exactly but I think it was around 6 months. |
I'm not trying to hijack the thread but I noticed a couple people said their vets wanted a certain weight before starting the heartworm meds. Is it better to go by weight first or age? |

What's the best heartworm medicine? And (I don't have the package near me rigth now) but does Frontline include heartworm? Or is that just fleas and ticks? |
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get your dog to actually take the pill? My puppy just sniffs it, pushes it around with her nose, and then turns her back to it. |

Use Heartgard Plus if you want to deworm (intestinal parasites) every month. Use Sentinel (Interceptor and Program) if you want to stop the flea life cycle. Fronline is not a heartworm preventative. There are others like Revolution and Advantage Multi none of which I would choose. We use Interceptor for heartworms. |
My vet just gave me heartworm med. (interceptor) to start my puppy on yesterday. She is only 14 weeks old, is this too young? She is 2.9 lbs. |
Five months. |
I'm planning on getting Interceptor and Advantage today. I have a 2 lb yorkie (11 weeks old) and a 12 lb yorkie (10 months). Is it OK to split the dosage between the two of them? Or should I give one full dosage to each? |
Ok, this may be a really stupid question, but is necessary to give heartworm meds? My lil one is 2 and has never been on them??? |
