Should I Get His Lump Removed? What Would You Do?
 
Hi,

I need everyone's opinion here. A month ago, Charlie developed a lump in his neck. I took him to the vet and she did a needle Cytology (to take out cells) on him for testing. It came back UNKNOWN except that there is a lot of inflammation. The doctor explained to me it could be a lot of things but never the less, she'd be shock if it was cancer and that the chances of that is so low. The proceeded in telling me, since he'll be neutered in a few weeks (Charlie will be neutered next Monday), she'd just have it taken off completely so it won't be there and also send a bit of that to the lab for testing.

But I just found out, just to have that mass removed is about $200!! Between pulling out baby teeth, neutering, micro chipping and pre-op bloodwork ... this is going to be well over $1000!!! Do you all think it's necessary to go ahead and remove that mass or just wait it out? What are your thoughts? Experiences? What would you do if you were me?

That isn't a bad price for a lumpectomy but $800 for neuter, baby teeth and chip? That is way beyond expensive compared to most places. Is it just because you are in NY?

If I could afford it, I would go with what the vet thought was best.

I would have it removed. I just went thru removing a mass from the top of TJ's paw. Thank goodness it was benin, but I am glad it is off and I can stop the worry. Just to have it removed, plus having the biospy on it and meds, etc...cost $550

When TJ was neutered (way back when) it $125

Why is the nueter so much $$$$

It's the area I live in, and my vet is already considered reasonable. Neutering is about $500-600. Each baby tooth pulled I think is about $18 and Charlie has A LOT of double teeth. Ugh! And Microchip is another $55. The pre-op blood work is $100. And there is still pain meds and etc.

WOW :eek: Are you sure you don't want look around for another Vet :confused:

The neuter does look pricey since it doesn't include blood work but it looks like the teeth are getting you. :(

That is the price for removal but does that include pathology also?

Thats the price of a vet in my area or surrounding area unless I go to the bad neighborhoods and no referrals. My vet is consider reasonable, my neighbor paid $800 to neuter her Yorkie. Eck.

Pathology is when they send it to the Lab to find out what it is.

I would have it removed at the time of neuter. It is best to get it off, since it is "Unknown" - He will already be under, so you might as well get it over with. Better to be safe than sorry is how I feel ;)

I would have the lump removed. The "inflamation", if it remains in his body could quickly escalte to something far more serious.
