Onions??!! How harmful are they? Just now, I was browsing Yorkie Talk, eating some McDonalds :) I had a cheeseburger and Tobey totally snatched the last bite out of my fingers!!! He has NEVER done that kind of thing before. But I am worried because I think I have read that onions are bad for dogs and the cheeseburger had those little diced onions on it. I tried getting it out of his mouth but he jumped off the couch and ran away too fast! the little stinker!!! anyway, should I be worried? If so, what could it do to him? I tried to search the threads but couldn't find anything really.... he won't die right?? |
He isn't going to die..unless he were to have a major allergy to onions. Zoe loves onions. I gave her one because she wouldn't leave me alone the one day while I was preparing dinner. She ate it right up... so much for that |
He SHOULD be okay. I have a friend whose mom feeds her dogs McDonalds for meals! :eek: Don't get me started on her... but the point is, he should be okay. :thumbup: |
my vet told me they can be very bad for them. I think there is something on here on the of the things they can't have try looking in the diet and health forum. and keep an eye one her. i think most of the time all the onion is in the center of the Mickyd's hamburger anyway. |

Onions/Garlic: Onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate. Onions are more of a danger. Pets affected by onion toxicity will develop haemolytic anaemia, where the pet’s red blood cells burst while circulating in its body. Symptoms include Hemolytic Anemia, labored breathing, liver damage, vomiting, diarrhea, discolored urine. The poisoning occurs a few days after the pet has eaten the onion. All forms of onion can be a problem including dehydrated onions, raw onions, cooked onions and table scraps containing cooked onions and/or garlic. Left over pizza, Chinese dishes and commercial baby food containing onion, sometimes fed as a supplement to young pets, can cause illness. While garlic also contains the toxic ingredient thiosulphate, it seems that garlic is less toxic and large amounts would need to be eaten to cause illness. |

teddy got ahold of some onion maybe half a ring on monday and I flipped out! anyway he is fine no vomiting or anything so I'm sure your baby will be fine :) |

There is such a small amount of onions on those McDonald's burgers anyways. I'm sure it won't effect him at all. |
Onions should never ever be given on purpose. They can cause hemolytic anemia (so yes...they can cause death). However, the small amount on a hambuger one time shouldn't hurt a thing. I would be more concerned with pancreatitis from the fried meat honestly. |
I know the other day I was cooking, and using cut up onions. I dropped one little piece of onion, looked all over for it, of course, the 15 lb yorkie that can hear a piece of food drop a mile away, came running. I couldn't find it, but, she did. You could tell by the way she was chewing she didn't like it, but, she wouldn't give it up. I know that one little tiny piece of onion won't kill her, but, I dont like her eating anything that can harm her, or any of the other ones. |

We put a little fence around each of the plants on the list. I have sago palm, azaleas, and oleander. I have a puppy and she loves to chew on the plants. :eek: |
My dogs got a hold of the trash and pulled out about a 1/3 of an onion. I am going nuts and yelling at them. I thought I kept smelling onion but couldn't find it then. I smelled one of their mouths and sure enough. I went to wash out his mouth and make them drink water. and then came back from the kitchen and their was the onion on my sofa.:eek: Does anyone have the free poision control number? |
no not at all don't be worried i truely believe all dogs are allergic to different things because my baby Bingo done have tried everything he can't eat anything while it is still hot cause he will throw it up but otherwise everything he seems fine with eatting i think alot of dog myth's are to scare us not everyone go's by the book sometimes u have to be off the edge and its fine that way my dog is always near me for everything i eat so almost everything i eat i give him to try cuz i feel bad n i feel he should try everything i eat he eat's oreo's n dosn't get sick from it thank god his vet says he is perfectly healthy and isn't over weight at all so that all that matters =) |

Love this site! 1st post! 4 lb Yorkie 9 yr old ate 1 Tbs raw onion, what do I do now? Is there any treatment or food I can give to be on the safe side .. My lil Guy is everything to US! |
