Allergies!!! I'm new to Yorkietalk and I have 3 yorkies babies. Daphne is my youngest and she was put on Hill's K/D for elevated BUN levels when she was baby. They are under control with the food but we feed all 3 dogs the some food. We've tried many times to separate them when feeding but it doesn't work. Lilly has very bad allergies and we've tried everything. The vet just put her on some new medicine and it isn't working either. I think it is the food. She gets these really bad bumps all over and itches like crazy all the time. We recently took in my father-in-law's yorkie and we've noticed it with him also. The vet doesn't think it's the food and my husband wants me to change vets and I just don't know what to do. Any help would be great..... |
Unfortunately, k/d does have several of the most common food allergens in it-- and so do the Purina and Royal Canin kidney diets. I'm not sure what to suggest if you can't feed separately. :/ Maybe you could try speaking to your vet about some alternatives to the k/d? Some of the vegetarian diets out there have a fairly low protein level-- I think Natural Balance's vegetarian formula comes in at only 17% or 18%. That is still higher than k/d's protein level, but it is quite a bit lower than most of the dog foods on the market, and it might turn out not to trigger the other dog's allergies since it would at least knock chicken and corn out of the ingredient list. Separate feeding would be your best bet, but it might be an alternative if your vet thinks that your other dog could stand the slightly higher protein level. |
K/D is so protein restricted that it would be extremely unhealthy for the healthy dogs to be on it. They really do need to be on something else for their safety. Can you feed them in separate rooms? The only way to rule out a food alergy is with an elimination diet. I would get a second opinion. :) |
