My vet is trying to get me to switch my food:( Hey guys. Ive been feeding my 7 month on EVO small red meat small bites now for about four months now with absolutely no problems at all. Small stools, vertually no smell, and no constipation. His hair is beautiful and hes very happy and playful. My vet asked me what food I was feeding and she informed me that it is two much protien for him. She wants me to feed him Science diet (which by the way she sells at her clinic). She said she has never heard of EVO and that I should be very weary. I know that EVO is a quality food and he's having no problems at all on it. What do yall think? |
I think they just want you to shop at their clinic:rolleyes: |

When I bought some evo small red meat small bites for mine awhile back(they didn't care for it), but, the lady at the pet store said we actually have a vet that is highly recommending this food now(the evo). If your pup is doing well on it, then keep your pup on it. The vets get good deals on the science diet. You want to stay away from corn, bi-products and soybean, and science diet has all of that in it |
Agreed - NO Science Diet!! :) It is because vets all over sell S.D. bad, bad vet - lol |
I think your vet honestly just means the best but vets are not given much education on pet nutrition- many will tell you this. They are usually paid to sell the brand that they do and honeslty think it is best for animals. Stick to your guns- EVO is a great food and your pup is doing well on it so just tell her you are going to stich with EVO- you have done your research and this is what you feel best feeding. |
Evo is one of the better kibble/canned foods out there, and if your dog is doing well on it, I'd continue feeding it. I would never ever ever feed one of my pets Science Diet personally. I'm in vet school and Marci is correct..we don't get a whole lot of small animal education - just the basics and what is taught is biased toward the big companies Hills and Purina because they donate so much to the AVMA. I hate that it's like that...I think good nutrition is so important for our pets and crappy food like Science Diet and Purina just doesn't cut it in my opinion. |
That was my gut instinct. I new I could count on you guys!:) |
We have a yorkie, and 2 schnauzers that are on Welliness, and Evo. I kinda give them a change once in awhile. They have never had any problems. I feed the small breed kibble (Welliness) and canned and canned Evo. The vets get a kick back on selling Science Diet. If that baby is doing well on it, I would stick to it. |
What is it with vets and Science Diet, mine does the same thing. Or else it's the Hills, they have that in every variety imaginable. |
Even my Certified vet Hospital carries free samples of SD  I'd also educate your vet on Evo, and let her know all about how good it is for dogs:) bring in a bag, let her see for herself ! She certainly is in for surprise. |

thats funny, my girls are on EVO red meat too (mixed with homecooked), and their vet has tried to persuade me to switch to some other food they carry (don't remember the name of the food) for the longest. I told him that I would rather stay with EVO everytime this subject came up. after all, you are the one to make the decision whats the best for you lil one! |
I agree to nix the Science Diet change and that your vets reccomendation is due to them selling it. How about if you tell your vet "ok, I'll switch, but I'll buy the SD somewhere else.".........then see what he says.;):D |
Maybe you could really get sassy and print this for your vet? I would keep him on this food, it sounds like he is doing WONDERFUL on it. :) The Dog Food Project - Is too much protein harmful? |
Well, I prefer at least one type of SD to Evo, so we all have our prefernces. IMO, some Yorkies do not do well with Evo at all and I would watch my dog's triglycerides if she ate it. |
My vet sells Science Diet, too. |
I hate this for ya...All the time and stress in finding a quality food that they will actually eat:rolleyes: You should definitely stick with Evo. Maybe take some information to your vet on your next visit about Evo. __________________ I  MADDIE :aimeeyork |
There really is some ground for thinking that EVO might be too much protein-- I don't think the vet should be dismissed off hand for suggesting it. I had one pet who was apparently healthy. I had him on EVO for several months, had bloodwork done and his renal values were very high. I switched him to a diet with a more moderate protein level and his bloodwork returned to normal. I don't care much for Science Diet either, but I do think that we should be very careful with the ultra-high protein diets out there, and not jump on the bandwagon of supporting them just because a website says that they are the best. I'm feeding grain-free diets with more moderate protein levels to my pets now with pretty nice results. |
Nikko had stinky soft poops when I had him on Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul, and I asked my vet what other food I should try. She recommended Science Diet, and said it was best because it's had the most research done on it (not a bad argument!). I then asked her about EVO, and she scowled at me and said that because she's never heard of it, it obviously hasn't been tested well enough, and it would not be acceptable to feed. *Sigh* So the next day I went out and bought a bag of EVO and started switching Nikko over to it. Within a week, his poops were already looking better and smelling less. Then within two weeks he had about 85% PERFECT poops... it was so awesome, I wanted to bronze some of them. :p Since then, he has been so much more playful, and he just seems happier. And just to put my mind further at ease, he had bloodwork done when he was neutered a few days ago, and everything was well within the normal range - particularly the part that looks at how well his body is handling protein. :-) Yay for EVO! Oh yeah, and he scratches himself dramatically less now after the switch as well, so there must've been some grain or chicken probably in the old food he was allergic to. I will happily concede though that higher protein diets may not be for all dogs, of course. Just like people, I'm sure different dogs handle proteins and carbs and grains differently. Nevertheless, I still would NEVER feed my dog a food whose first ingredient is corn. But I'm kind of a hippy that that, lol. Certainly the final word is yours in what you feed your dog, and if he's doing as well on EVO as Nikko is, I say stick with it!!! Lauren & Nikko |

I agree. We had a little Maltese on another forum I belong to have abnormal bloodwork - high triglycerides - while on Innova's Evo. He also had fatty deposits behind his eyes. Everything returned to normal after he was switched to Wellness. We have a vet tech on the same forum who said that they have seen similar cases from feeding the high protein diets. I guess they are every high in fat, too. I would never feed one of my pets Science Diet, though. There are some really great premium foods out there that are lower in protein and fat besides Hill's products. |
