Elevated Liver Test My little boy Chewy is turning one on the 24th and he is being neutered today but the doctor just called and told me he had a slightly elevated liver test and that he was going to run another test. Should I be worried? What does this mean?:eek::eek: HELP! |
I would guess that his ALT was a bit high and now your vet is doing a bile acids test to rule out liver shunt. He has to be fed for this test to be done properly, so the neuter should be postponed. |

He will be fed. Blood will be drawn two hours later. The blood will be sent to a lab and you will know if there is any abnormality in 1-3 days. Was the neuter cancelled? |
Where can I get information on this...what are the complications? Will he need surgery? What is it caused from? How will it affect him in the future. |
You know Romeo had ALT 2 weeks ago of 146.Vet we ahead with his neuter....He's doing fine ..He will be tested again on the 10th of this month. He told me not to worry ..That it just may be normal for him...What does that mean? |

A slightly elevated liver enzyme may not mean anything at all. And it could be up for sooo many reasons. There are plenty of discussions about liver shunt on YorkieTalk. You can find them with the search on the bar near the top of the screen or with the search bar at the bottom of the screen. |

Thank for the information...I will have to talk to vet again...Because I told him I did not like the fact he went ahead with the surgery without my approval..I did not even know about the high alt until I got there to pick him up....What is ur opinin? |

But there is a very long list of possible causes for high ALT and just because it goes down doesn't always mean the bile acids are normal. |
I just put a call in to vet now. He may not know that much of LS. Since I'm just finding out ...I heard that alot of vets don't know alot about ..I live in a very small community. So there u go. |
I was just reading on a website that some of the symptoms include excessive drinking and urination vomitting, running in circles just to name a few and Chewy is always drinking water like its the most important thing in his life and I just thought was normal for him. Okay I need to calm down and relax....its so hard. He is my baby, I know your not supposed to have favorites when you have more than one, but he is my favorite. |

Ellie's vet just goes ahead when something is just barely out of reference range but I don't know how high something would have to be for her to tell me first. Of course if I asked her to read me all irregularities before surgery she would. And there are other reasons that he could be drinking excessively like diabetes insipidus. It isn't necessarily LS. Some symptoms would be seizures, circling, head pressing, drooling, blindness, diarrhea, vomiting, medication reactions, lethargy, inappetance, etc. Or no symptoms at all. |
Yep Romeo is my favorite also....I criedthe day I found out from reading so many bad things.I evencalled my breeder and asked her. She asked me the same things you said was the symtoms...So she told me I was over-reacting.So see I don't know what to thinknow...See I can'teven type now.lol |
