What's the best food for my 4 month old?
 
I was checking out the link to all the premium foods but they are so many! I have Sasha on Eukanuba puppy for small breeds but I want something better for my baby. She is 4 months old. Her hair is starting to change- I guess from puppy to adult hair- her hair is still beautiful but lately it doesn't look as beautiful as before. she has never been to the groomers though. Don't get me wrong, I give her baths, the vet clips her nails, I take the goo out, brush her teeth and hair regularly.

The point is that I know diet has an effect in their health and appearance.

What do you recommend?

There are MANY different brands on here that are recommended.. it's all about trying them and finding which one works best for you and your babies. We prefer grain-free foods and brands we like are Wellness Core, Nature's Variety Instinct, Taste of the Wild, Orijen, and Natural Balance. Other brands that include grains are Wellness, Nature's Variety Prairie, Innova, California Natural, Merrick, Canidae, Chicken Soup.. the list goes on and on.

I like to use www.petfoodanalysis.com as a reference but keep in mind it is just an opinion so I would suggest you learn as much as you can about nutrition and decide for yourself which foods are good and which aren't! :)

I too feed grain free, I use Merrick Before Grain. Choosing a food can become very overwhelming. It seemed like the more that I read, the more confused that I became. Just like with a skin baby, not all foods are going to work with everyone, and it was a trial and error process for us. Just remember whatever you decide to try, make sure that you make the transition slowly, and if one thing doesn't work for you I would give it at least a week before I tried something new.

Great advice! :thumbup:

Take the time to research your dogs individual needs and learn about the actual nutritional value (or lack thereof) of common food ingredients vs just picking something mindlessly off a list somewhere.

Look into all you options...commerical foods, home cooked, raw feeding, supplements, etc, and decide what is best for you little one.:)

Great advice!Try new ones slowly , and do research. I feed mine Innova/Solid Gold and home combination's of chicken/turkey and complex carbs.

When I called Wellness they told me you shouldn't feed Wellness Core to a puppy. The protein is too high. I not sure about the other grain-frees. But I'm waiting until Jasmine if 1 to switch to a grain-free food. She's doing great on Solid Gold.

Everyone will have a different idea of what is "best" so it is really hard to say- but there are some guidelines when looking at dog food labels.

Stay away from any food that has "bi products" as ingredients- these are parts of animals that are not fit for human consumption- so you dont' want your pup eating it!

Make sure at least the first, if not first two, ingredients are meat.

Stay away from any food containing corn- our pups tend to be allergic to it.

Look for "good starches" potato, brown rice....

If i was feeding kibble (i home cook for Layla)- i would probably go with Nature's Variety or Orijen.

Make sure when you make the transition to do it slowly- your pup might have af ew days of loose poops but that is normal :)

We use California Natural Lamb and Rice for our little ones and they love it. It has very little ingredients also which we found to be good for them.

California Natural Lamb and Rice Small Bites has been a wonderful food for my babies. Agreed with their tummies, good for their hair, less likelihood of allergens. Not to be overly descriptive, but my dogs poops are perfect on this food, except now one needs a prescription diet, but that's a story for another thread...
