Kennel Cough Hi! I am new to these forums. My husband and I recently got two yorkie puppies (sisters) - Annie and Nora. They are tiny girls at 1.7 lbs & 2.5 lbs. Annie is the smaller one and started coughing a day after we brought her home. We immediately took her to the vet and they diagnosed kennel cough. I know it's very contagious so we expect Nora to catch it as well. It's been three weeks now. Nora started to cough about two days ago. Annie has been on antibiotics the entire time. Nora started them yesterday. We have been adding humidity to the air and taping their sides to loosen up the mucus in their lungs. We have been giving them Nutrical once a day to try to give them some extra help. Any other suggestions? I feel like they have had it forever! Are they passing this back and forth? Please tell me this will go away soon! |
My vet told me yesterday that Gracie can have this for several months before it goes away, because of their size...she's been on antiobiotics for two weeks and is on another round again. |
toby took three weeks to get over his........ i didnt use antibiotics ...... i just gave him some childrens robitussin cough adn cold to help with the cough....... but that was it....... its really not AS BAD as people freak out about....... when i first found out my friend told me to rush him to the vet like he was going to die.....lol..... totally not the case |
Thanks! We tried the Robitussin but they hated the taste and would spit back at us. Both seem to be doing a bit better after the couple days of antibiotic but now Annie has an upset stomach. We are trying the rice & chicken diet today to see if that helps. I feel like we haven't begun to do any training at all beyond housetraining because of this. |
When we got Carter at Christmas, my vet suggested the kennel cough vaccine. I had never heard of it at that point. I'm so glad I listened and had the vaccine administered so that I don't have to deal with what you are all going through. Puppy kisses to all those furbabies who are going through it. |
I always make sure that my babies have the kennel cough vaccine as well. I believe they call it Bordatella or something similar to that, and the vet administers the vaccine through the nose. Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your baby! |
Gracie got the Bordatella Monday and it was given via shot, not through the nose. She fights me every step of the way when I try to give her Robitussin too! |
My girls got the Bortadella back on December 29 but I think it's not 100% effective (or so it seems!). |
be aware that the "kennel cough vaccine" is not a sure fire way to guard against kennel cough.... it only guards against one type of bacteria that can cause the sickness but in reality there are MANY germs and bacteria that cause this not just teh bardatella...... as for spitting up robitusin...... toby did that at first as well, BUT we kept at it adn he finally started taking it without even being held... |
