Question about food. I am about to start changing over Lucas' food, from Royal Canin mini puppy 33 to Orijen Puppy. I have a couple questions. Is this a good switch? I have been trying to do my research and this was what I selected, but I want to make sure this is a good change. (I put a few kibbles of the new food in with his old food and he seemed to have picked them out I think he likes the new stuff :p) Also, how gradually should I be changing the food? Like how much sholud be old and how much new and for how long? He eats about a half cup a day. Thanks! All advice or experiences are much appreciated! Maddie & Lucas :animal-pa |
I like Orijen a lot- great food- If you are looking for a Canadian food- Go is great! just a thought :) I would take about a week- he WILL pick out the new stuff - cause it's new :) But make sure he eats his old food too or the switch will be too fast for his body- he might have loose poop for a few days- but i doubt it as RC isn't that horrible of a food. |
Thanks! There are so many foods it is very confusing which to pick  |
tell me about it ! ! ! |

Orijen is an excellent choice. :) |
Orijen is a very good food. As for the transition period. This is the method I use with my dogs: Start with a mixture of 25% new and 75% old and feed that for 2-3 days, then step it up to 50% new and 50% old for another 2-3 days, and finally end up with a combo of 75% new, 25% old. If you don't detect any changes in their digestion over the transition period, you can start feeding the new food exclusively. However, the protein in Orijen is a lot more than RC (9% higher). So I would really watch your pups stools. My dogs loved eating Orijen, but it was too rich for them and their stools became very soft and even runny sometimes. But there are plenty of great dog food out there. I now switch between EVO, Wellness CORE Ocean, and Solid Gold Barking At The Moon. I am also thinking of trying Before Grain kibbles. Good Luck! |
Any other changes? Quote:
Thanks! Another quick question: What other changes can I expect when switching to Orijen? Will he get less itchy? |

Well, i'm not sure what issues your dog was having before. But the RC blend you were feeding has grains and corn gluten - some dogs have no problem digesting those ingredients, but a lot of dogs also don't do well with them at all. Orijen is a grain free diet, so you may notice a few changes. If you notice your dog stop itching, then you know your dog does not do well on grains and corn gluten! If the itching doesn't go away, you may try adding some skin and coat supplements. Like, Solid Gold Seameal or Grizzly Salmon Oil. I did notice that my dogs coats improved when putting them on Orijen for a short while. Much more shiny and soft. Hope that helps! |

Does food affect the puppy's mood at all? Will he be even more energetic? Hehe |
