Is corn bad?? Ok so i AM pretty new to the forum still but LOVING It by the way! everyone is so nice on here and i love looking at all the cute pictures of everyone's babies!! Its also great to buy yorkie outfits at GREAT prices, and i cant wait to donate so i can start selling also! But i have a question.. So ive been feeding Bella Purina since she has been 1 year old. Someone was telling me the other day in a different thread that if the first 4 ingredients on the package is corn then that is bad. I was wondering if this is true? And if it is, what ingredients should I be looking for? What is the best food out there to feed a yorkie that is not over the top expensive and somewhat reasonable?? Thanks!!:) |
Some dogs are allergic to corn and some aren't. Mine LOVE corn. We even give them a small ear of their own when we grill. We put butter and a little salt, and they act like it's a steak. hehe! |
Cool!! He he Bella would love that ! ! |
Purina and other pet food from the grocery store is made from the waste of the human food industry, the not-fit-for-human-consumption ingredients. :( Please read this article from the Animal Protection Institute: API: What's Really in Pet Food -- An API Report This is pinned in the Health & Diet section. It's a great guide to finding a high quality pet food. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...e-samples.html |
can i ask what you feed your dog and where to get it? Thanks!! |

The cheaper food may look like a better deal with their big bags but most of the ingredients are just fillers with little nutrition for your pet, you have to feed them more each meal. The more food with fillers you feed means more unnecessary poo to pick up... Many of the grocery store foods are also sprayed down with grease from places like fast food restruants to get dogs to eat it. It's all very scary. |
yuck!! I'm so glad I asked. I just have to find the right brand now I suppose. Anyone have an idea for me? |
I suppose for those who don't believe that dogs digest grain and only like grain free, yes corn is bad. However, I don't mind feeding grain and corn is a good source of energy and linoleic. It may be cheap but I don't think that that automatically makes it bad. If Ellie wasn't allergic to it, I would consider it as her carb source. The commercial foods that contain corn tend to be the ones that contain unnamed meat products and questionable preservatives though, so I would avoid it if you are feeding a commercial food for that reason alone. When talking about it being an allergen, veterinary dermatologists report beef, wheat and dairy products just as often if not more so. I'm not sure where the, "The first four ingredients have to be meat or good grains" is coming from because what is the definition of a good grain? It is important to look at the final analysis and not just the ingredients. Protein can come from non-animal sources and show up in the guaranteed analysis and that doesn't necessarily make it a bad food. |
Hmm what do you feed your dog? |
