vaccine question-lepto (we're at higher risk) I know that most people say dont give the lepto. My concern is, I live in the country, I dont want my puppy to be one of those that does nothing but get carried around, he loves to play outside. I also will be taking him with me to my familys when I got back home to stay, they all have dogs, and so do all their neighbors (unfortunately their neighbors dogs run loose, and I seriously doubt are vetted) and I have to let my dog go potty outside. I also work at a zoo, I do only wear one pair of shoes to the zoo, and I do not wear them at home, I take them off before coming inside and leave them in the garage, my clothes go immediately in the wash as well. I was at the vet today, and she said that she usually gives the lepto to all dogs, big and small, she said it was no problem not to, but she rarely sees any reaction, and we are in a higher risk area. What would you do? I would be devastated if he got sick because I didnt, but same goes if I do... |
Mine get it and have had no problems. Im also in a high risk area |
do you give benedryl or something before hand? Ive heard the first shot often isnt a problem but subsequent ones are, have yours had more than one? |
No I dont give benadryl. Mine are 4 so theyve had it several times with no reactions |
I think this is one of the hardest decisions with Yorkies. I don't know what I've do. Michigan is very high risk but because Ellie has had a vaccine reaction (it was likely from rabies or lepto), she can't have it and she is okay. However, if she could I don't know what I'd do. It is easy to say skip it but it is a dangerous disease. At the same time, it has killed Yorkie pups. I can only tell you that if I was going to give it, I'd give it two weeks apart from any other vaccine, possibly premedicate with Benadryl, stay at the vet 1/2 after (hold them in the lobby) and use the lepto single...not a combo shot. I think Pfizer makes one. And this won't even protect against all strains, so your pup will still be at risk... Reaction is more likely the second or third time but possible the first. |
