Help!! put weight on tiny yorkie Isabella is 2.12 and she is skinny in my opinion. But when does my opinion count right:eek:...hehehe But I would like to put some weight on her..I feed my yorkies Royal canine 28 for yorkshire terriers. They have all been on this food all their life....But Isabella is small and she looks skinny ..She just does not eat very much.I have too watch while they are playing, to make sure she does not get hurt in the mix of playing ruff with the others. If any one has any suggestion,Please let me know. Thanks Sheila::aimeeyork |
Maybe mix some chicken breast pieces or cheese into the kibble |
How old is she? If she is a pup and doesn't have much of an appetite, it may warrant some testing. Do her ribs feel too prominent? Ribs are a great way to assess body condition. If she is not a pup, you might think about changing foods to see if one appeals more to her. Also, Royal Canin has some allergens in it, fyi. For a denser, caloric "boost" you could give little dollops of peanut butter and small pieces of cheese. You could also add a fish oil, like Ark Naturals Royal Coat, to her food. |
I have my youngest one who is 1 and weighs 2.5lb. She is super healthy and I got every single testing done. some just don't gain weight..lol..But if you want to try, try putting more carbs in her diet. But healthy carbs like boiled sweet potatos, whole wheat pasta. Just mix it with the kibbles. According to my girls nutrionist, that's most natural and safe way to put on some extra pounds or ounces..lol |
Thanks for info.. She is 1 yr old. She is healthy. She visits vet regularly. No her ribs do not show and no sharp edges at hips but she is skinny...Simply put she is skinny. I like alil fat on my yorkies. They look healther to me . She is one of 4 that I now have but I just thought some good ideas to put some calories in her diet would be good for her.I do feed her pieces of cheese for treats and she loves them but no I don't want to change her Royal canine. I believe in the food. I have fed all of my dogs royal canine for years .IMHO Just some ideas to add to her calorie input. She is tiny and does not eat but smaller portions at a time,(she has a peitite lil mouth. No underbites no over bites; scissor bite; just petite. Thanks for the idea of the peanut butter good idea also the fish oil. But not sure what the fish oil your talking about. But I will research it..:)Thanks Sheila:aimeeyork |
Here is the fish oil plus Vitamin E which is excellent. Just put 1/2 tsp in their kibbles daily. | Medi-Vet Animal Health and try putting sweet potatos in the kibbles also. My girls love sweet potatos. |
Hey sweet potaoes sounds good to me...Good idea....I know when someones hear skinny ..they automatically think she's sick. But she's cared for like a pediatrician would care for someone's child..Which my human children are grown :p .. But she is a lil girl...Sassy as she is.... But thanks for all the input loved it. Sheila;) |
A lot of great advice here. I wanted to share what is working for me :)... I got some baby food, chicken flavored, 1st stage, I put a little on my finger and touch Lexies dry food with it, to kind of coat it, she eats her dry food like its heaven and has gone from 1.50 to 2 lbs. in 2 wks. I offer it this way 2x a day, the rest of the time I just give her the regular dry food. It seems that putting the chicken coating on the kibble encourages her to eat, if not she would just eat a few kibbles and that was it. Hope something here helps your little one. :animal-pa |

Oh also, you can put organic wheat pasta in the kibbles too. it's a great carb source. |
