How safe are lawn treatments? My wife and I became the proud owners of our first Yorkie in December. Today Chem Lawn came to our home to fertilize our lawn for the Spring. (They use granulars and liquids). At that point I realized and asked myself, "what is the danger of professional lawn care products to Yorkies?" I called Chem Lawn to discuss my concern and they stated that the risk is minimal and "negligible" at best. Any opinions out there? Do any of you have your lawns treated? Is it safe? My wife has been a wreck all night worrying about Sophie. I want to believe the risk is minimal, but I would like to obtain the opinion of others that may have encountered the same circumstances or have had the same question. Thanks in advance for any help or information you can provide. |
We are VERY careful about what we treat our lawn with. We always read the label to make sure it is either safe for pets or we apply it when we are going on vacation and our pups won't be home to walk on it. Better to safe than sorry. |
We have Chem lawn as well. We wait at least 24 hours after an application before we walk on the grass. |
We treat our own yard. We'll stagger treatment - i.e. treat the back yard one weekend, then the front yard the next weekend. |

I was told that after it dries, it wouldn't cause any harm to pets. I only let Prince go out on the deck and walk him on the sidewalk. I don't like to take chances. |
Update! Hi all....I spoke with my Vet regarding lawn treatments. Her rule of thumb is to double the amount of time that the lawn service tells you to keep the furbabies off the lawn. If they say 24 hours, then my Vet said to make it 48 hours. She uses the same service that I use. I will take her advice, however, I do like the idea of doing it yourself and doing one side of the lawn one week and the other side the next week. |
To get rid of fleas and ticks in your yard use Ivory liquid soap in an attached spray bottle to your garden hose. spray your yard and fence. You may have to repeat in 2 days. This will kill ticks and fleas in your yard and safe for you pups...Good Luck |
All chemicals have risks. I wouldn't use anything unless I had to. We do get our house sprayed for bugs because we won't live with them... this keeps the fleas away and hasn't caused a problem. It works well for us because usually Ellie doesn't even need flea preventative, so it is actually safer for her. |
Yes, lawn spraying is chemicals/pesticides and can be dangerous to your pet. Also weed killer is very dangerous to your pet. We use Lawn Chem where I live and the little yellow signs they put up state not to walk on the grass for 24hrs. I try and wait two days and go in the oppisite direction since the different phases spray on different days. THey even spray the dog walking area. There have been many fights with the board over this but they do it. Several dogs have died in the past from cancer (mouth) there and you just have to wonder:( |
Last year we were not aware the landscapers had fertilized our lawn (they were suppossed to tell us first) Pixie had a reaction to it and we didn't even realize what it was from until a few days later when we found out they had fertilized. She ended up in the ER with stagering and hypoglycemic like symptoms. She was ok the next day but we never let ours on fertilized lawns now until at least 3 days later. |
Those chemicals they spray on the lawn is very dangerous to any pet. Also you may want to consider NOT doing that because it also kills the little ants, and those ants eat flea larva. We only put down Scotts plus and we do half the back yard at a time and wait 2 weeks to do the other half. |

As a past owner of a lawn fertilizing company - these treatments are absolutely NOT SAFE for our babies, particularly if there is any weed killer, crabgrass control, or insecticide involved. You need to wait a minimum of 24 hours, then water the lawn really well and let thoroughly dry and even then, I would be wary for a few days. If your baby goes outside to potty, make sure you immediately use a baby wipe ti clean paws, the underbelly and I would also use a fresh one to wipe off the mouth. Any chemicals and/or pesticides can not only be absorbed into the body through the paw pad, but if they then lick their paws it is even worse. Our little guys are so susceptible to everything, these chemicals affect them much more than if you had a "big dog". Even the granular formulas without weedkiller are not safe for consumption - hence the warning labels about not using in food gardens - so even be careful with them. There are some natural products available out there, but Chemlawn does not use them. |
