Car Sick Newbie Question: We took our 5 month old Sully (named after the famous pilot) on his first car trip to Petco to buy some stuff. It was only a 12 minute ride. As we pulled into the parking lot - he tossed his cookies. EWW! Do dogs get carsick? What can we do? Will he grow out of it or are we doomed to take barf bags and wipes everytime. We've only had him about 3 weeks. |
I am not sure what you can do about it, but I know that Tobie sometimes get car sick when we go on long trips, so if I know that we are going out of town, I only give him only water, we usually leave mid morning so its not like he goes that long without food and I make sure that I have the AC on so that he does not get to hot and this seems to help. Maybe someone will beable to help you more. Welcome to TY! |
My puppy gets carsick sometimes (though not always). My vet told me to try to schedule it so that Violet had not eaten for at least an hour before the car ride, preferably 2 hours. For long car rides, I was told I could give her children's liquid benadryl to help her sleep - you'd have to work with your vet to find out the dosage amount. Violet hated the benadryl, but she slept most of the 8 hour ride to my parents' house for Christmas, and didn't throw up once. I didn't give her the benadryl on the way home, and she was fine the whole way. I don't know how that happened! |
I had this problem when Bree was around the same age. It happened every time I took her out for about a month and then it stopped. I'm not an expert or anything, but I think it came from her being a little nervous about her new environment and not being use to riding in cars. |
Yes this has happened to all three of mine. They do outgrow it but I make sure they dont eat alot before our trip and always carry baby wipes in my car.....Also Nutacal after they get sick... |
I have one that hasn't outgrown it....he's 1 y/o and still gets sick if we ride for more than about 15-20 mins. I give him 1/2 a Bonnie tablet, like dramamine but none drowsy. He's 8 lbs, so check the doseage with your vet. Given about 20 mins before the trip, works great all day long. :) |

My first yorkie (r.i.p.) got carsick as a pup. Fortunately, she outgrew it around 10 months and then loved going in the car. My current two have never gotten carsick. They love the car too. Mayzie does tend to get a little nervous about it but she loves it. I guess it's excitement. Who knows. |
