Teeth Extraction I have had recommndations to have puppy teeth extracted if they have not fallen out by the age of 1, and I have had it recommended to wait till they are two. Buddy I had done before he was a year, Bella is almost a year and still has some remaining puupy teeth. What is the best length of time to wait?? |
You can do it at the time of spay/neuter. Other than that, I don't think there is one best time. The longer you wait, the more chance for bacterial build up. It can also be painful. |

Ellie had retained baby teeth that were never pulled then another vet said she didn't have them anymore a few years later. So they did fall out but because of all the plaque on her teeth, it seems that maybe it was some kind of rotting issue. I would personally probably do it before 12-18 months. |
my magic also retained puppy teeth and they pulled when they neutered him. i had never seen this before. is this normal with yorkies? he was 6 months old at the time.:aimeeyork |
advice please! My female Yorkie is healthy, active, loving; at 8 years old, she is always mistaken for a puppy. Over the years she has had dentals. Currently, someone brought to my attention that she has really bad breath. (It doesn't bother me!) And then I realized her two front teeth and one bottom were loose. I rushed to the vet and he said he has to remove possibly 4 teeth. I am so upset. I don't want it to get worse, but I am concerned about her being without her front teeth; what will that do to her heath and eating habits? Thanks for your advice... |

Most people get the retained baby teeth pulled when they have the dog spayed or neutered. Unless you are showing the dog then you can wait to see if they come out on their own but they have to be out by the time they turn a year old. |
puppy teeth? I am confused - I got my dog when she was about 3 years old and she is my first pooch - Do all dogs or just Yorkies loose their baby teeth? Do they grow back and then have adult teeth like people? I don't want my adult Yorkie to be without teeth, but I am afraid of the alternative. Thanks again for your input. |

My problem is that their adult teeth weren't even in when they were spayed/neutered. So now I am very reluctant to have them put under again. Trixie goes Friday to get spayed and doesn't have adult canines yet so i won't know till afterward if they are going to come out on their own. She will be 6mo on March 8th and I don't want her to go into heat so she gets "fixed" now. Pebbles will be 1 in March and has a double set of canines. I'm going to ask my vet on Friday when I bring Trixie |
Don't be alarmed Michelle002! Hi my 7 year old Francie just had 7 of her 9 incisors removed. We were shocked. Plus, more in the back. She still has 30 teeth. Thanks to YT I've learned so much. Yes our Vet was not communicative, sounds like yours is better at it(where in NY bty?) Infact Ellie May has reponded to my posts. She is so cute and I'm sure yours is too. Incisiors are the weakest and can cause grave problems should they become loose and remain in. I have a co-worker who did not have extractions on her Maltese and lost it a month ago, she's devastated. In most cases any amount of preventative treatment won't help at that stage on those bad teeth, they are just bad, its not your fault. You should still brush or use dental spray or OraVet gel, for the rest of the teeth. Wondering did Ellie May have preventative treatment before hers were extracted? What age? The best thing is you took action. I know its a shock but you are great and brave to have gone to the Vet asap. Now you've prolonged the lifespan of your Yorkie for sure!!!!;) |
