Leg Perthes Disease...(My girl Chloie) Hello to all: Could anyone comment on Leg Perthes disease. My "Yorkie" (Chloie) was diagnosed with Leg Perthes In October/08, the disease was first noticed on September/08, when she first started limping (right hind leg). She was 9 months old at the first indication of her limping. She is 14 months old at present and weighs 5 pounds. She had corrective surgery, end November/08 and came through with no complications. This is her 4th month into healing and there is a marked improvement in both her walking and running. However, when she asks to go outside on cold days to relieve herself, I've noticed that she favours her right hind leg and lifts it from the ground. When she finishes her business, she runs up the stairs and into the house. When inside, she is fine and plants this same leg firmly on the ground. My question is how long will it be before she fully heals, or will she always at times favour this leg. An and all comments would be greatfully appreciated. My prayers go out daily, to all those with sick yorkies, as well, as to all those, who have lost their best friends. I've experienced both. Getting another "Yorkie" has always eased the pain and discomfort. Sincerest Thanks, Gary |
I've read a lot about this disease and I am so sorry for what you have gone through. I'm new to the Yorkie world - my baby will be two next month. With my Bailey, I worried about the worst and hoped for the best - so far, we have dodged every yorkie scare - including Legg Perthes. The only reason I am posting to this thread is that Bailey does the exact same thing when she pottys. She raises her rear right leg and puts all her weight on the left - she always pees at a tilt. Also, we have two steps from the deck to the patio and when going up those steps she slightly raises her right leg and launches off her left. (I wonder if this makes Bailey is left legged?? :) ) I don't know if this is what your baby is doing - but I can tell you that my baby does it all the time. Best wishes to you and Chloie!!! |
I have a 10 month old female Yorkie who had Legg Perthes Disease. She weighs 5.2 lbs. We found out the first week of December when she was 8 months old. She had her surgery on December 29. She is just starting using her leg most of the time in the house but when I take her outside she always carries that back right leg. I thought maybe it was because the ground is not even. My vet said that it will be a good 3-4 months befored she is 100%. I worry about her because she still carries that leg quite a bit in the house especially when she first gets up and at the end of the day. There hasn't been a day when she hasn't limped. Does your baby still limp in the house? |
Here is an interesting article on the condition. I'd never heard of it until this post, and it turns out this affects Yorkies more than any other breed (people also are affected). Legg-Calve-Perthes disease |
